I'm sure that many of you expats have heard of the "Korean Blood Type Theory"(which stems from the Japanese theory), but for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a brief rundown:

Among Koreans, there's a popular belief that a person's blood type is predictive of their personality, temperament and compatibility with others. It's similar to the Western world's views on Astrology, but of course, the Koreans take it one step further...some Koreans take blood type so seriously that they use it as a basis for discrimination!

If your blood type is A, you're considered trustworthy, hardworking, reliable and somewhat introverted. This blood type is deemed best suited for women.

If your blood type is O, you're considered passionate, outgoing and driven, if a bit flaky. This blood type is deemed best suited for men. (Supposedly, more past Korean Presidents have had this blood type than any other blood type.)

If your blood type is B, you're considered independent (which can be interpreted to mean, "selfish") and self-absorbed with a strong personality. Men, especially, get a bad rap for having this blood type because they supposedly make horrible partners and are more prone to extramarital affairs.

If your blood type is AB, you're considered to be somewhat unpredictable and a bit of a loner - you're either a genius or a nut case.

In Korea, A is the most common blood type (34%), followed by O (28%), then B (27%), then AB (11%).

In comparison, in the UK and United States, O is the most common blood type (45%), followed by A (40%), then B (11%), then AB (4%). (Stats for both countries are nearly equal!)

Of course, there's absolutely no real merit or scientific proof to the above theory, but don't be surprised if a Korean asks you what your blood type is and then automatically draws certain parallels about your personality or behavior! And if you're a male and your blood type is B, it may be in your best interest to not disclose this information to any Korean woman that you're interested in dating! And no, I'm not joking! Smile

Blood Type Has No Effect on Relationships: Study
Chosun Ilbo (September 8, 2006)
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200609/200609080032.html
Quote:
Blood type has nothing to do with who will form a relationship or get married, a survey suggests, pulling the rug from under one of the odder superstitions that survive here. The Korea Marriage Culture Institute, a division of matchmaker Sunoo, studied 16,383 couples -- 1,366 of them married -- over the five years since 2001 and found that the distribution of blood types among men the women married or had relationships with was about equal.

Of the couples studied, women of type O were involved in relationships with 25.8 percent men of the same type, 27.8 percent of type A, 26.7 percent of type B, and 27.9 percent of type AB, or a roughly identical breakdown. Women of type A were involved in relationships with 34.8 percent of men of the same type, 36.7 percent of type B, 36.1 percent type O, and 34.6 percent type AB. Women with type B or AB were in relationships with O, A, B and AB men in a ratio of 25.8-28.2 percent, and 9.8-10.8 percent respectively.

The combination rumored to spell doom -- type A woman and type B man -- was in fact the most fortuitous, if within the margin of error, at 36.7 percent.

For 5 years I dumbfounded every Korean as I continually said "I don't know my blood type". No one could believe it. Three weeks ago I had a baby. None of the nurses could believe that I didn't know. BUT, they did check it for me.

I'm an "O"

If I wanted to believe Nazi eugenics propaganda I'd probably not have come to Korea in the first place.

You're also possibly Jewish or Asian, and thus inferior to the great Aryans.

Ha ha. The only reason I know my blood type is because I've donated blood a few times! Smile

Yes, I found this on another website:

The discovery of blood types in 1901 has been hailed as one of the greatest advances in medical history, but the breakthrough was then used by the Nazis to further their eugenics program, and claim the superiority of Germans mostly types A and O over Jews, Asians and others with a larger proportion of type B blood.

And that's where the Japanese got the idea from.

I'm A+. I've always known, maybe because my mom is a nurse...
And i've always been dumbfounded when other people don't know their blood type.

And by the way, the OP's description of an A blood type suits me to a T.
But in my opinion, this theory is like star signs, a load of rubbish, albeit interesting rubbish.

What is the Rhesus factor? I know it has to do with antigens and their relation to certain prenatal diseases, but I don't really understand the overall implication or its importance. Thanks!

Yeah, I think it's all rubbish, too. That said, I'm O+ and I think my personality most closely matches the description for my particular blood type. My sister is A+ and the A description definitely fits her the best. Pure coincidence, I'm sure...but it is interesting to note.
