I just moved into this apartment. I turned on the ac today that's on the wall and the little flaps opened up. I looked in and the thing was filled with mold. Do you clean this or get it replaced? If you can clean it, how do you clean it? If you replace it, do you talk to the owner?

I have heard that you should cover the area where the air comes out with a towel and turn it on for a while, turn it off, investigate contents of towel, and I guess decide from there.

It depends on what kind of 'aircon' you have. First, most have a filter you can take out and clean (some you can rinse). Clean that first. As for the mould, use a q-tip or something like that and clean it yourself but that doesn't always work. If it's really bad have a Korean friend talk to the local AC shop, just walk down your street there's one in every area. Tell them the brand of the AC (LG, Samgsun etc.). The shop will have a repair guy come and clean it. I had mine refilled and cleaned last summer during peak season and a refill and cleaning was only 50 000w, so just a cleaning should be less than that.

When the repair guy gets there have a Korean friend with you. The repair guy can give you tips on how to maximize the efficiency of your particular AC and how to keep it clean (because the repair guys have usually worked for the manufacturer all their lives). It may be a pain but will save you lots of money in the long run.

Cheers
