I'm renewing my contract with my current employer. I understand I won't need to make a visa run in order to get a new work visa, ARC, etc; it just requires a trip to Immigration. However, I've been offered a camp job in China this summer. I work at a university so I have the summer off; there's no schedule conflict. Do I need a permission letter and amendment stamp in my passport in order to do the China job? I can see this one going either way.

Also, I just renewed my passport. There's no work visa in the new one. When I registered it with Immigration, I was told that the ARC is what really matters. When the time comes to visit the Chinese Embassy and Immigration, I figured I'd bring the old passport along, as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Don't be too paranoid, your korean employer doesn't own you.
You are leaving to work temporarily in a different country.

What you do on your vacation in a different country is none of their business.

That was my suspicion too: what I do abroad is not under Korean jurisdiction. However, the presence of a Chinese work visa in my passport might raise an eyebrow at Immigration. Considering the lack of consistency here, I thought I might as well do some preemptive asking-around.

You do not need to do anything other than ensure you have your current work visa extended AND a NEW re-entry permit on your Korean work visa BEFORE you leave.

When you extend your current work visa it will cancel your re-entry visa (assuming you had one).

Get a new one at the SAME TIME that you extend your work visa and update your ARC. Save you any troubles, extra trips to the immi office or worries later.

I've got a multiple entry visa (I'm American) so re-entry's not a big problem. Or it ought not to be. I'm going to Thailand for a week, two weeks before I leave for Beijing, so that makes things kind of complicated, logistically. Seems like I should get started now. Thanks for the suggestion.

Be VERY SURE that your multi-re-entry is carried over onto your extension. Usually they are NOT - not even for Americans. Your multi re-entry is only good for the 1st year.

When you get your extension make sure you get a MULTI re-entry updated at the same time to save you the grief of a canceled work visa later.

Ugh, thanks for that heads-up, too. I hadn't heard that part. I hope it's not difficult to get one.
