Damn immigrants, don't they know that America was once open to European immigration only? Now that European immigrants don't want to come anymore, AMERICA IS CLOSED! We tried letting a few immigrants into America of non-European descent and look at what's happening, THEY CANNOT ASSIMILATE TO OUR EUROPEAN CULTURAL CREDO! THEY REFUSE TO ABANDON THEIR LANGUAGE, CUSTOMS AND CULTURE FOR OURS! What kind of Americans are these? These people will never and could never be "real" Americans! They want to change America and I will not have one bit of that going on; hell fcking no, dammit! So the answer is "hell no!" No more immigrants!
Just kidding.
I voted "yes." Let anyone who wants to come here be happy.
I have a feeling I will get flamed, so I hope everyone reads all of what I've written.

Personally, I think everyone needs to go through the regular channels to become a citizen. Immigration is great for the U.S., but legally should be encouraged not discouraged.
I'm in South Korea now.. legally. What if Korea had some system where if I was here ILLEGALLY for awhile, I could live and vote for South Korean presidents and live here the rest of my life without a problem.. but by being here legal with my e-2 visa.. I am unqualified for that? |

But of course! I am sure plenty of "real American families" will want to lend out their high school aged children to do back-breaking part time work picking strawberries in Watsonville, California if the migrant laborers get the heave-ho. |

Oh.. so then let's start with what the Bush Adminstration, CIA, several congressmen and senators have done contrary to the law and the Constitution.
The new Kennedy-McCain bill is addressing the paper legality of immigration.
Let's not engage in circular reasoning here. |

That would mean 12 million people who now qualify for minimum wage. Would the companies who employ them then fire them and import new illegals?
I'm undecided on the issue, but I'm pretty sure the problem's source is the businesses who employ illegal immigrants. Is there language in this immigration reform that addresses such hiring practices?
If there's not, then I doubt this is much of a solution. |

No.
The Americans need a total overhaul of the system. And, out of a principle of fairness, those who broke the law should not be given special treatment over those who are toiling through the system (like me).
But the labour is needed, and the culture can handle large influxes of foreigners.
They need to allow firms to employ whoever they want, legally, within reason. The guest worker idea is excellent, as is the move towards a point system. People ought to be able to import immediate members of family with some small restrictions (elderly parents are not able to qualify for social security, Medicare/medicade...the importing individual must provide for them these services). Criminals, cronically ill (Canada often gives refugee status to HIV pos Africans who manage to touch Canadian soil...which is practically the definition of bad immigration policy) and those individuals who come from nations that actively teach hate and murder as a state/religious ideology (no comment) should be fully prevented from touching American soil and quickly deported in the event that they do.
America is a nation of immigrants. It is also a nation of laws. It must remain BOTH. |
