|
|
It seems an employee of Samsung couldn't take anymore 14 hour days and working weekends etc. All for a hagwon teachers pay. He wrote this resignation letter and e-mailed it to every Samsung employee! Most of it was deleted but some copies leaked onto Naver and Daum.
Any Korean language whizz-kids out there care to translate the gist of it? It seems to be pretty juicy stuff. BTW, this is just a summary. Not the full letter.

My Korean friends are telling me this is the big issue on Naver and Daum but you won't see it on TV news as the TV companies are too scared of pissing off Samsung and losing advertising revenue. |

A while ago I thought it would be fun to put together a website of all these weird little things that pop up on the Korean web and suddenly get banned and disappear, never to be heard of again. |

This was really banged out quick, so there are certainly small and probably major errors in it.
Quote: |
A resignation message left on the company messageboard by a recent employee who quit is causing a stir. Money Today reported on the 31st that concern has arisen over the resignation message left on the 30th on the company message board by an employee of Samsung subsidiary Samsung Products which says that Samsung is "becoming the frog who stayed in the pot."
According to Money Today the message says "As much as I cried out that I loved the company, I'm leaving it." It said that the employee hadn't decided on another company nor had any plan to study but was quitting nonetheless.
After compeleting 1 tough year, this 'Samsung Man' says, "After entering the company there were so many things going on that I didn't understand" and "Why do they drink so much? Why do they pay with the company card? Why does everybody go to the company dinners when nobody likes to?"
According to his opinion, "If the company wants to be revived it must have a flexible culture, be liberal, be full of originality and innovation, and be on the level. It must have a system that coldly compensates people based on talent and merit alone. The people should be working like crazy out of fear of being lazy or fired (trans -- not sure about this one).
"People should lose sleep over their personal performance, over where they will be in 5 years, over where the company in 10 years."
But he says, "I have no idea what this company believes in, how it is changing this slowly, and how it will maintain itself.
"Put a frog in a pot and slowly boil the water and it will adjust to it. It's body temperature will rise and it will begin swimming and then one moment it will be cooked and will flip over on it's back and die. At the moment when it needs to jump out of the pot, it is just dealing with momentary problems and going along." Just like when making great changes in oneself, if you are just going to take comfort in (cheap) consolation, your fate is to die.
He contends that the most dangerous enemy of reform is change.
"If there are a 100 points where we need reform and we make 30 changes and continue on while pretending to have dealed with all 100, we are avoiding 70 points. He says that he is talking about the "70 points in the company's future that they have decided to avoid."
What has frustrated this former Samsung man even more is that in these types of situations is that without any sort of hesitation or worry, people keep following along.
He asks that they create, "an environment that can change my mind, please".
"My last wish is that 10, 20 years from now I can say 'why did you leave? if you had just stayed a little longer it would've really turned out well.'"
As soon as the new employees resignation message began circulating the message board, Samsung Products deleted all related material." |

Regarding racetraitor's comment, there is a site recently made for just that purpose, http://koreabeat.wordpress.com .
It'll probably have the full text or another article or a better translation up soon. |

Good work Billybrobby......my Korean co-worker read it for me in English today and it's just about identical to what you say.
The main point of this guy's resignation letter, as it was translated to me, his most bitter jab, is that he thought he was going to work for a progressive, global and forward thinking company. It turns out he found himself in the same old, new is bad, old is good, don't challenge your elders, enjoy the free soju, galbi and room salon, scene.
Oh, and think yourself lucky to work 14 hours per day. You're in Samsung! Why should you complain? |

My personal experience with working witht eh people from the big 5 chaebols in Korea tells me that this is not going to last very long. They will keep pushing their wheight until things start to break and then we can get another financial crisis. |

I like staying in one place, (as opposed to running around the city) making 58 Million won per year plus 20% of that in bonuses, free kalbi and drinking dinner parties twice a week. Free gifts at chuseok and a few other times per year. I will be choosing the Flat screen TV this year btw; I can leave and go run errands anytime I want, don't need to ask anyones permission...I get paid on time, every time. Yes, I work 12-14 hour days - but more often than not, we play starcraft or watch movies...is that really work? Some meetings last 4 hours. So what? I've had worse in my life. I don't think one year at Samsung qualifies him to judge the company. |
