to be smart, to be short, to be good, to be old....
in a phrase such as "the boy is seriously smart," or "the man is happily old" to be old...or smart, short, good etc. is some kind of verb, but does it have a special name? Perhaps one of you grammar gurus could help me out here...thanks! |

In both your examples above, "is" is the verb. I'm no grammar expert, but off the top of my heard, "is" is the third person singular present tense form of the conjugated verb, "to be."
"Smart" and "old" are simply adjectives describing your subjects, "boy" and "man."
"Seriously" and "happily" are the adverbs that modify your adjectives.
Hope this helps! |
