|
|
I was gonna title this 'can I use my mobile phone in Korea?' but wanted to avoid the inevitable (and justified) flaming I would receive...yes, I do know that generally Western phones and Korean cell phone networks are incompatible.
However, I also know that many countries, including Korea, are now introducing HSDPA cell phone networks that provide much faster data connection speeds and that there are a limited number of phones available at the moment that can take advantage of this. I believe that these phones do require SIM cards, whereas CDMA phones in Korea don't normally have SIM cards slots. Anyhow, I have a HSDPA phone (Nokia N95) and was wondering whether anyone knows if these ultra new phones will work on the Korean HSDPA networks or not using local (Korean) SIM cards?
So yes, it is kind of 'can I use my mobile phone in Korea?' but coming from a more up-to-date perspective. |

From what I've read and heard:
Yes, you can ROAM in Korea with your Nokia phone, provided your service provider at home has a roaming partnership with a company in KOrea. So in that respect, your phone will work.
No, you can't just pop in a Korean SIM card into a western phone and have it work.
I'm not sure if that will change in the near future, but for right now, you are stuck buying a Korean phone. If I were you, just bring your phone over here just in case. |

Thanks for the response! Yeah, I'll bring my phone and see what the deal is when I get there. I don't really want to use roaming as I'm coming to live in Korea for a year and the charges would be completely exorbitant! |
