I'm wondering if the administration at your hagwon has the students evaluate their teachers. Is this a common practice in Korea?

Thank you,

Yes, my school (a unigwon) does teacher evaluations by students. They're done at the end of the semester. Questions range from the content of the class, the textbook, to the instructor's teaching style.

I don't mind these evaluations; in fact, I like to see how students feel about my classes and teaching. However, at my school, the results of the evaluations are linked to promotions and renewing contracts. Basically, if a teacher gets a couple crappy evaluations, he or she's out of a job. This is risky since the students are the only ones doing the evaluations, and things like discipline problems can totally skew the results.

Look at your contract and ask your administration if student evaluations are used, and if they're considered in retaining teachers and renewing contracts. This might be an important factor in taking a job.

Any evaluations by students less that high school age I would refuse even to look at. I'd bin them right in front of my boss. Even evaluations by tech HS students forced to take English would go in the round file.

My school, an FLHS, does a lot of evaluating. Everyone gets eval'd, even adminstrators. It's a constant process done via our intranet.
