Ok so you go abroad for a year or a few...obviously you must have canceled your health insurance back hom right? What do you do when you get back home and get sick? Is there some sort of travel insurance that will cover you for a while when you arrive back home and are re-applying for health insurance? |

I went back home (Canada) for a few months recently and got insured with the blue cross ... it was a little pricey, but I'm paranoid. |

It depends on what province you return to.
If you are returning to Alberta, there is no delay. As soon as you establish provincial residence you can get your AHCIP coverage.
In Ontario (OHIP) you have a 90 day wait from the application to active coverage.
Some only have the wait for people who are moving from within Canada because your old healthcare covers you for 90 days
but
NEW or returning Canadians with NO other provincial coverage are immediately covered when they apply.
Others (like OHIP) make everyone wait the 90 days from application to coverage.
Check the provincial health care websites for specifics in your home province. They do vary from province to province.

I've used these guys a couple of times. You absoultely can't afford to be in America for two hours without health insurance. A simple broken arm would probably set you back a couple of thousand bucks. We always buy insurance when we go back for a visit. Call me paranoid, but you can't afford to even get a simple infection in the states these days. One of the major perks of Korea if you ask me. Its not hte best medical system, but it sure is cheap. |
