Hi, I am looking over a job oppertunity to work in Sajickdong, Busan, at a school called KJC. I've heard that they are quite well known, but I'm wondering if anyone has any actual experience with them. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks a lot.

I can't speak for the school personally. What I can suggest is that it would benefit you to ask questions to foreign teachers at the school.

Talk to more than one of the foreign staff and ask pointed and specific questions when the boss is not listening.

1 ) What are the hours? (start time / stop time / breaks).

2 ) How many classes per day, week, month? Not hour many hours per month. 30 classroom hours can mean anything from 1350 -1800 minutes per week standing in front of the class. The difference can be up to 7.5 hours in front of the class each week.

3 ) Do they always pay on time?

4 ) Do they really pay overtime or avoid it with creative book keeping? Yes = Red Flag

5 ) Do you get credit for classes on the national holidays or do you get the day off but still have to work your 120 hours before you get overtime?

6 ) Do they have national medical (with the little booklet)? No = Red Flag

7 ) Do they pay into pension? No = Red Flag

8 ) What about the holidays? 10 or more working days? (legal requirement here) No = Red Flag

9 ) When and how do you get your holidays?

10 ) What extra stuff do you really have to do mentioned or not in the contract?

11 ) Is the school having financial troubles? Yes = Don't work there

12 ) Does the employer have a history of firing employees for the sole purpose of not providing severance pay, last months wages, and a plane ticket home? Yes = Red Flag

13 ) What are the behaviors of the students towards ALL teachers like in and outside of the classroom?

14 ) Do they make additional deductions from your monthly pay not mentioned in your contract? Yes = Red Flag

15 ) Ask very detailed questions about your apartment. For example;

(a) Did your employer provide you with the furnishings as stated in the contract?

(b) What were the overall conditions of the furnishings as stated in your contract when you moved into your apartment?

(c) Was your apartment clean or dirty when you moved into it?

16. What are the main attractions in the city the school is in?

17. Are there banks close by the school?

18. Ask about trains and bus terminals. How fary away are they from the school?

19) Why are you leaving?

Hey, thanks a lot for leaving such a detailed suggestion. One question that I have though, is how to get in touch with teachers at that particular school? I don't believe the school has a website; I'm not sure where I can find anyone who works there. Any suggestions on how I could find teachers at that school? Is posting that question in Daves ESL the only way, or are there others that you might suggest?
