Today, in the same class, I had three girls (at different tables) who were catatonic. I was waving my hand in front of one's face and she just sat there. Her friends said "She sick." At a table across the room, aonther one was laying her head down on her desk. Same thing. And another one, who looked on the verge of tears throughout the class. She simply said "sick."

What the hell is going on? Granted this took place in different stages of the lesson, so while it might not have been the most exciting lesson I've given (even though the other 30 or so students participated), I'm pretty sure it wasn't me.

I don't usually let things like this get to me, but I was almost on the verge of sending them out of the classroom--but my school doesn't have a nurse.

Is this common or am I just blessed with the good 'uns?

Yeah - ahpaeyo, ahpaeyo - I get it all the time in some classes, more so at certain times of year. Sometimes it's for real and sometimes it's not. When you've been teaching the same students long enough you'll start to get a better idea of which ones really are and are not.

Epedemic? No way...it's a pandemic. It's called 'end of term stress'.

You should see the number of broken hand/fingers/arms/feet at my school.

At least one in every class. Sometimes two or three.

1) I kick them out of class to go to the doctor. Whther they stay or not, I mark them absent.
2) This always happens around test/exam time. All of a sudden so many people have medical excuses for missing them. Rolling Eyes

I know!

It's like what did these kids do? Did they juggle bowling balls lit on fire while standing on razor wire?? Shocked

That is an interesting question.

If they spend that much time together, then perhaps they are cycling together....

Do these girls live in a dormitory together?

GOD! One more reason to teach elementary school! Laughing

I have one grade 2 and one grade 3 class mostly made up of girls who live further away and live in the dorms, spend almost every waking hour together, and do cycle together. It probably does explain them once in a while.

Once one of them from such a class left a school function because she was having really bad cramps. 'Why's she leaving? Magic time?' I asked her friend. She nodded, 'we are all magic time'. Well thank goodness I'm not teaching you today, I thought.

Magic time? LOL!

I've got all the above doc! Broken limbs (even my ankle is fucked, but that's a different story...) and some bug going round that renders only the girls green. The K teachers seem baffled, but it appears genuine.

I too suggested that maybe they'd like to leave the classroom if it was so bad, but my co-teacher shook her head as if to say, 'sorry, can't do that.'

In Konglish that's what it be. OUP really should have found a new name for it's Magic Time EFL series to market to Korea.

Oh well, today I did quite well in my vocational class of 28. One absent and only three apayo, two of whom I think may genuinely not have been well.
