In a bold move, Apple has released its Safari web browser for Windows:.
#1: Holy Frack!
#2: Go get 'em, Steve!
EDIT:
OK, some initial impressions and complaints:
- It seems a little "fuzzy" on my screen. Not sure if I can adjust my settings to fix that or not...
- I lose my toolbar at the bottom of the screen. I normally like it "hidden" anyway, but when I run Safari it doesn't pop back up again. Humph.
- I love how the tabs can be grabbed and dragged around. (Can't do that on my G4 / 10.3.9)
- The "set page preferences" on Yahoo's main page doesn't work. Probably lots of things out there that won't work properly for a while...
- Overall, Safari just looks better on a Mac than on Windows - just like iTunes. Still, glad to see Steve-O taking the risk.
It is just a Beta, though... hopefully they'll get all the bugs worked out before the "official" launch in the fall.
2nd EDIT:
Every time I try to edit bookmarks, the whole thing crashes. Not an auspicious start... |

That's a good question, one which I can't really answer. I've only *just* started using Firefox, and only because one particular website that I use (tvtorrents) has recently started crashing Safari everytime I try to access it for more than 15 seconds. Weird.
At any rate, my impressions of FF are that it's VERY similar to Safari (at least on the Mac). To me it seems that things are just a little bit slower... although, all of Yahoo's features DO work, and tvtorrents DOESN'T crash when I use it... maybe FF has the edge after all? I'll have to spend more time with it, both on my Mac and my work XP machine. I'll get back to you.... eventually... |

It seems to have no speed advantages that I can see. Pages load slower IMHO, also it doesn't seem to support the "back" key on my mouse. Annoying as hell. It looks to me that all the time installing it, setting bookmarks, and re-saving passwords and getting used to it is better saved sticking with Firefox. |

Safari is quite buggy on Windows, plus what's this?
And be careful :

Within hours of Apple's public release of the beta for Safari 3.0 for Windows, three security researchers independently found holes within the new browser. |

i'm a devout firefox user (so many awesome extensions!), but it's a serious memory hog as well (by design for speed, not because of code bloat) so i don't think it's quite fair to just compare it like that or claim it's buggy. how many tabs opened and the content of the pages have a serious impact on the memory footprint.
i heard Safari has a slightly faster renderer (i wonder how it compares to Opera though, the current champ on the Windows platform), but aside from that it really has nothing else going for it in its current form. |

It's the extensions that slow it down. They way it is built, to be extendable, makes it a memory hog.
If you want fast, go to Opera.
I'm trying Safari, but it sure looks weird! |
