|
|
My friend coined the term "stick-to-itiveness" for the way Koreans seem to stick to one course of action, preferring to bring brute force and long hours instead of trying to take a step back and think if there is a creative solution in the offing.
Here's one rather amazing example: There's a lot of road construction on a stretch of pavement in Myeong Dong. There's only a couple little narrow pedestrian ways on either side. One is basically unidirectional. Traffic has to find another way. Of course, as we all know, scooters go where the people go.
Anyway, I nearly lost my lunch when I noticed this scooter guy trying to plow on through. I mean he could have easily jinked up a block, got on the multi-lane parkway, and then jinked back. But no.
Did he make it through? See the outcome on youtube. Features a near upskirt moment.

Stick-to-it-iveness has long been used by people who, for whatever reason, can't remember the word "tenacity."
Your friend's use, however, sounds more like a synonym for "doggedness." |

I want to see scooter vs. stroller on that street.
Who would be more outraged? The mother or the scooter driver?
Hmmm... |

The other day I was going down some subway stairs and the train was in the station. I figure no way I'm going to make it so I'm not going to run like Koreans with their heads cut off to make it just in time to see a train leaving the station. Another one will be along in 5 minutes.
Anyway, the train was somewhat delayed and the doors were still open. I moved cautiously toward the doors but then they started closing. So I stopped. I remember that wonderful video of the Korean woman trying to delay a train's departure by jamming her baby and stroller in some closing doors. The train took off with the stroller and baby in the doors.
I figured everyone in Korea must have seen that video and been well schooled in the danger. No? Ah who am I trying to kid... even if they saw the video it would be expecting a little too much for people here in Seoul to synthesize the information. "Hmmm, that could be me too!"
So, I did the sensible thing and stopped. Well, the old man behind me had to quickly do a little dance around me and make an extra mad dash for the doors. He caught them as they were about 70% closed and tried to pry them open. The dude doesn't look like he has the strength to get up the subway stairs, let alone pry open doors. Luckily an alert driver caught it and opened the doors.
The look I got from the old man... "WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU ACTUALLY STOP FOR CLOSING SUBWAY DOORS?"
Like I was the one in the wrong... |

You gotta love the audacity of this guy pretending like he made up stick-to-it-iveness. It's like when George Costanza says, "I once told a woman that I made up the phrase 'pardon my french.'" |

my girlfriend tells me this isn't a trait of Koreans, it's a trait of those whose blood type is A. |

My friend doesn't actually claim that. I claim she coined it. First time I've heard it was from her mouth. I stand corrected. |
