Had something sent over from France. It was Fed-ex'ed. The total value of the product was almost 100 euros and the cost of shipping was 35 euros.
It gets to Korea 2 days later. But sits in the airport for two weeks. It wasn't until I contacted Fed ex Korea that I received word that the package couldn't clear customs. Fine. But why did it take two weeks to inform me of this? They claimed that they were trying to call me. But I sometimes unplug my phone because I don't like to be woken by Korean telemarketers. But they could have sent me an e-mail (they have my e-mail) or they could have sent a letter to the delivery address. Anyways, whatever, I'm willing to chalk this up as being my fault for not making myself more accessible.
But, is it law for customs to charge the 23% they want from me on the price INCLUDING the shipping charges? The actual cost of the product is 100 euro but they want to charge me 23% on 135 euro (including the cost of Fed-ex). Is this reasonable? |

Hi,
It's not a matter of being reasonable, it's a matter of being law. I thought it was 25% on whatever you import? Regardless, yes, they do tax you on the total amount (including shipping). |

| Yeah, customs charges include the shipping cost. I usually have stuff sent to my dad's house. Then he repackages it and takes off all tags (signs that its new, not used) and sends it to me. Customs never stops this stuff. He also tries to cover as much of hte box as possible in clear packing tape. They don't want to bother cutting through all of that just to look at some packets of taco mix and "big size" shoes. |

It depends entirely what you're importing. Laptops are 10%, my digital cameras and accessories were 18%, desktops are 20%, used books/CDs are 0%, etc. |
