Well, soon will be the time where I may want to re-sign with my school. Here's the situation: My contract is up in December, but I want to extend for 6 months. In September of next year I want to go back to school. I won't find out about my acceptance until April or so, thus I can't really make assumptions. If I get into my first choice, 6 more months here is good. If not, then another year might be in store and then I'll try again.

If I ask for a 6 month extension on my contract, do you guys think the following is reasonable?

-100,000 raise/month.
-my current contract is up just before xmas and a week holiday. Therefore, I'd ask for an extra (unpaid) week off to visit home.
-They'd owe me the original return flight. I'd ask for a return ticket for xmas, and I'd pay for my return after the 6 months.

I know you'd usually only get 'visa' run money for extending, but I'm going to try to get that return flight.

I actually want more time off, maybe a month (and still do 6 months afterwards) and I'd be willing to give up the 100,000 raise to get it....maybe. I'm thinking this works for them because they're saving on 6 months worth of bonus they don't have to pay and they get an experienced teacher at the school (this particular school values that). The problem may lie with the timing of the month off. Its winter intensives time. Maybe I can get Feb off instead?

Anyway, my friends tell me I'm crazy because if I decide to stay for a another year I'm screwing myself out of the bonus along with some other benefits. They tell me to just re-sign for the year, get the month off (which I'm sure I'd get if I were to sign for the 12 months) and see what happens. Thing is, I'm way too honest. And its all about karma. I can't really complain if the school lies to me if I lied to them first. Do you think its acceptable for me to say something to the effect of, "I'll sign for another year....unless I go to school..."

Anyway, I'm just typing out my thoughts, sorry its so long. Basically, any advice on my 'demands' for extending 6 months is welcome.

Thanks

From what you have written in your posting you honestly don't know at the moment whether you will stay for the 12 months or leave after six months. It does depend on things that you don't know at this stage. You are thinking about leaving at 6 months to go back to school - but you do not know if that is going to happen. And it would not be good for you to only extend for 6 months when you may end up wanting to stay for the 12 months ... with all the benefits that gives you.

I think what I would do in your situation would be to sign for the 12 months ... but then as soon as I knew that school was actually going to happen (rather than just being a possibility) I would give the school good notice of what I was going to do ... ie as much notice as you can ... which would give them time to find a replacement ... if necessary.

To me this reflects the reality of your situation at this stage. If you had confirmation that you were definitely going to go back to school I would extend the contract for the 6 months - because to me that would be the honest thing to do (and that is important to me). But it does seem from you posting that you don't know yet what is going to happen later in the year.
