|
|
I did not bring a laptop to Korea. So, I plan on using my school's computer to download tunes from iTunes and to sync my iPod there.
Does anyone know how to sync an iPod onto a new computer without erasing the original files on the iPod?
I know there is a trick to it, like moving a consolidated file from the iPod itself onto the iTunes library, but I did not consolidate the music library before I left for Korea.
Any tips? |

| Maybe set the school comp to 'manual sync' and just drag n drop what you freshly d/l onto the existing ipod. Personally, I abhor auto sync functions... I want to be in control of what goes on with my media, and my devices, for that matter. |

As far as I know, there is no 'drag and drop' capability with an Ipod. That is the worst limitation in my view. Or maybe there is, read on please.
To "back-up" your files to the new computer, first connect your IPod to the laptop without running Itunes.
Then you have to do "show hidden files" in the folder view options on
the computer. Now the IPod is visible under "my computer". Open the
IPod and you can see the song files. But all song files have strange
names like "XYZAB". You can copy all those files to your computer.
Then, when you "Import" those songs into ITunes, the songs names will
be restored, mostly.
Now you can add songs to ITunes and resync to your IPod. The drawback is that about 10% of the songs will still have the unrecognizable filenames "XYZAB".
Maybe it is possible to drag and drop songs INTO the Ipod after doing the "show hidden files" step. But I wouldn't chance that. You could try (I wouldn't). |

as far as i know, there's no way to do it ... because itunes requires certain files ... also, apple have geared ipods to be a 'one way street' meaning you can download to the ipod, but not upload from it (unless you're using it as a portable harddrive).
however, i have successfully removed songs from an ipod before:
go to www.ephpod.com and download their software that rips music from an ipod. install itunes and rebuild your library from scratch.
then you only need to synch the ipod to itunes (as usual) and it'll update your ipod.
then you should be good to go. |

| Yes, 'tis a one way street. Heaven forbid that you might try and make a second copy of a tune purchased from iTunes. |

That's strange. I thought Apple stuff, 'just works'.
When I put my non-Apple MP3 player into my non-Apple computer it 'just works'. Everytime. Without any software or limitations. How the i-pod and i-tunes get so many users just baffles me. It's must some kind of trick with smoke and mirrors. |

Exactly, iTunes/iPods tend to change the filename to something encryptic so you couldn't tell kdic83k.itu from eidc8jhf.itu. I seriously do not know who people like using iTunes. It must be the smoke and mirrors! |

Thanks guys for the advice.
I just transferred my purchased music onto the school PC, and the rest of the music is gone, but I have my CDs to reburn them if I want to in the future. So, I didn't lose any money, and I bought some new music.
Now, I can listen to some new tuneskis throughout my tenure as a "Glorified Tape Recorder" in South Korea (reference, GaijinSmash.net) |

| It also baffles me why so many people buy Ipods when they're so restricitve. I just bought a new Iriver clix and it's awesome! Wouldn't be great for the OP though cos it doesn't have huge capacity. I used to have an Iriver H320 and that was great too. I could drag and drop files like an external hard drive and watch videos thanks to the upgradeable firmware way before the Ipod video came out. Only bad thing was the size... a bit bulkier than the Ipod. But the new clix is tiny... far superior to the Ipod nanos imho. |

Agreed 100%: never again Apple for me - too much like the original sin. |
