Hi I'm new here my name is Jim and I'm minoring in ESL/Linguistics at a university here in the States. I was wondering if I having a minor would be more/less/equally advantageous as a TESL cert, and could I parlay that into more pay. Admittedly, I'm planning on a hagwon, but I consider myself a pretty serious student of language teaching/learning/acquisition(ie I know the difference between ESL and EFL--good for me). I'm not just in it for the $$$. Any help would be appreciated.

I studied linguistics, have a TEFL cert and 4 years of experience teaching ESL and I could NOT get any extra money from Hogwans from abroad. I really thought it wouldn't be a problem at all. But sadly it seems that they couldn't care less.

You WILL get more from a public school gig.

You will NOT get more from a hakwon. They are in business to make money, not teach effectively. If you cost more they want someone else. The bottom line is lowered expenses and not necessarily better teachers.

Good teachers make students learn. Learning is NOT fun (forgive me tomato) so most hakwons want the 20 something, bouncy, fun, let's play, blonde haired, blue eyed girl stereotype.

Cheap eye candy is easier to sell than hard learning.

Get a public school job.
