I noticed one of the Korean presidential candidates has this plan to link up Korea with a system of canals. The idea being, I guess, it would vastly lower the cost of shipping in some way rail lines won't. The whole idea smacks of a '30s movement called "Technocracy" that's kind of still alive today, kind of promulgated by a bunch of old coots who still kind of live in the day when offices wired with vacuum pipe message delivery systems and stock prices were transmitted via ticker tape.

Anyway this canal plan is referred to as "Continental Hydrology"

The whole idea seems to be Technocracy schemes will bring such vast wealthy and prosperity that people won't have to work. They'll be free to pursue lives of leisure and only work at jobs they truly love.

Given the yin/yang symbol in logo of Technocracy and the Korean flag and the candidate's canal idea, makes me wonder if he's not some cryptic adherent to this rather dated movement.

Nah, its just some pretty basic pandering to the people whose land the proposed canal would go through. It'll never really happen.

The whole canal thing set off distant memories of the '80s. I remember some old coot in my home town of Windsor once mailed me some material about his "Technocracy" group. At the tender age of 19 I wrote a letter to the editor mocking some Christian fundamentalist, or something. I guess he figured I was ripe for recruitment. Bring in some new blood.

The old coot in Windsor used to bring in his Technocracy magazines and various literature and leave them for sale at my friend's book store ("South Shore Books") on a consignment basis. My friend with the bookstore was always happy to give some of Windsor's nuttier people a voice.

The old Technocracy coot would come in every week to see how his literature was selling and would always be dismayed the stuff wasn't flying off the shelf. I remember he drove a K-car with the Technocracy label proudly emblazoned on the doors. Looked very official.

There is another Technocrat by the name of something something Moon something or other, that has proposed a tunnel between Alaska and Siberia.

Apparently some funds have been raised.
