Can anybody give me some quick FAQs on hiking around Jirisan mountain? What are some of the hikes like? What about lodging in the area. Anybody wanna toss their two cents at me? |

I did a 3 day hike from Jurye to the main peak in jirisan a couple of years ago...
The hikes are tough..
If you have never been hiking i would suggest you try some smaller mountains first...
If you have done a bit then you will find it really enjoyable...
There are a few shelters scattered over the mountain ridge and a couple in the valleys leading up to it...they are cheap(about 5000 won) and i never have booked (but not sure what would happen if it was full - sleep outside) but they are very basic. you need to carry all your equipment with you...
One of the best hikes i ever did, very enjoyable but you do need some level of fitness.....
Of course you could do the one day get up and down trick but I never found that much fun..... |

Did Jirisan a few times...in fact I am due to go back this fall....
I will second this however:

I find Jirisan to be well worth the effort. I always end up meeting really interesting folks hiking there (Koreans and the odd westerner).
If you have not really hiked before...bring yourself up to fitness par by doing hiking in your area...I know in Busan there are good hiking spots (kumjong mountain for example)....increase the toughness of the hikes and then go for Jirisan. |

There are smaller hikes in the Jirisan national park like the one from sangyessa to the waterfall...which is really nice.
However i have a feeling you are talking about a big hike....just remember you are lugging around about 10 kilograms on your back as well. |

I've never done it, but I've looked into doing some of the smaller hikes, as I don't have any hiking or camping equipment. The information online is a little sparse, so first-hand knowledge from posters here will be the best bet.
There's some information about different courses on the Gurye county website: http://www.gurye.go.kr/eng/jiri/climbing.htm Even the smaller ones seem quite pleasant, and can be done in a day.
I'm curious, where in Jeollanam-do do you live? There are tons of mountains all over the place, though nothing the size of Jirisan. A nice warm-up might be Wolchulsan, in Yeongam county. It's 808 meters and is a popular (and crowded) mountain in the area. http://wiki.galbijim.com/Wolchulsan Other popular places are Mudeungsan, in Gwangju and neighboring counties, and Jogyesan in Suncheon. Thanks for the tips. I might try a couple of the smaller ones first. I am a little out of shape. Too much teaching and all. |

Apparently from seoul you can fly cheaply and quickly to Yeosu airport which is only 30mins bus ride from gurye & the nat. park.
Sure beats sitting 6 hours on a coach: I may give it a go this week. |
