My boss just asked me if I'd be willing to extend my contract by six months. I have a little over 100 days left until my contract ends. It's been a roller-coaster ride in Korea thus far. My question is...has anyone ever extended for 6 months? Is it even legal?

Extensions of work visas are done all the time.

The process is quick and painless.

To get an extension on your visa for WORK purposes simply take:

-One page addendum to your contract duly signed and stamped by you and the school AND with the end date clearly marked,
-your ARC,
-your passport,
-an application filled in and signed by you (from the counter at immigration)
-a copy of your bosses business registration
-a signed and stamped guarantor paper from the school
-30k won

down to the local immigration office. The process takes about 30 minutes including putting the stamp on your ARC to show your new exit date.

.

Cool. Good to know. Now, I would like to know what I should ask for. I'm not asking them to bend over backwards or anything. I won't be going home at all for another 10 months, it seems. Any ideas on what would be reasonable to ask for? Has anyone ever done an extension of 6 months or more? Help please!

What do want to ask for?

A small raise might be in order and perhaps some vacation time between the original contract and the extension but beyond that.....

Make sure you get your severance at the end of this contract. A raise may or may not be important. Get 100,000. Not greedy and not a total loss. Or get an extra severence at the end of 6 months. Or both. Get 100,000 and 6-month, 500,000 severence. Come up with a figure you can both agree on. Don't get too greedy though. I think a total of 1 million is very reasonable. And it's more money for you!

I was thinking about a raise from 1.9 million to 2.3 million, 1/2 a month's severance at the end and an extra vacation day at christmas. I don't think that's too greedy. I won't get any days between my contract because my contract ends during Chuesok. My boss is considering letting me go home for two weeks but I decided against that.

I accepted 2.0. She gave me the foreigners make too much money compared to Korean teachers and I don't think its fair speech. I'm a bad negotiator...

You should not have caved...finding a new teacher would have cost her much more and if she didn't want to shell out, you could have gone home like you planned.

She said she would think it over and discuss it with her husband. I don't know if she'll accept it but honestly, part of me wants her not to accept it...
