I have been asked to - right now sunday afternoon with no notice - write from scratch a speech that a fifth grader will practice tonight - with me supposedly - to memorize overnight to give in a speech contest tomorrow.

The topic: "Why _________ (Harry Potter) is My Favorite Person/Character"

But I have neither read the books nor seen the movie nor discussed it in class.

Why do Koreans like Harry Potter? What do Koreans say about Harry Potter? How do they describe him? (hero? funny? power? what do they say about him).

Any and all tips and insight as I google the hell out of this topic is appreciated.

I have about three hours...

Aren't you the guy always bragging about having a lot of Korean mates? Ask one of them - most folks on this board aren't Korean, so how would they know?

They like what everyone else likes about Harry Potter and the books. The books are a great read. They keep your attention from page 1 because Rowling, the author, is a great storyteller, and she seems to really care about the characters. Harry is of course the main character who unbenounst to him is the son of 2 very powerful and heroic wizards that died protecting him. He has a lightnight shaped scar that proves he survived the deadly encounter with Voldemort, the most powerful and evil wizard to ever live. Voldemort actually dies supposedly b/c he tried to kill Harry with the most powerful and deadly curse in the wizarding world. It hasn't been revealed yet, but it seems that Harry is as powerful or more powerful than Voldemort ( the most powerful wizard in the world ) I consider the Harry Potter books alot like the Star Wars epic. Luke comes from a powerful and heroic line but grows up in obscurity without that knowledge. Harry's the same. He reaches early adulthood without knowing the truth about who he is or where he came from. He's famous in the wizarding world b/c of the fact that Voldemort died when he tried to kill Harry as a baby. He's all powerful man!

Harry's also a cool character b/c he's loves his friends and is a kind and loving person even though the family he's been raised by are plain crazy. His Aunt Petunia loathes him b/c she was jealous of her sister the witch. Her jelousy translates to Harry who in turn is also a powerful wizard but in the 1st couple of books she and her horrible husband try to keep Harry out of Wizarding school.

If you'de like I can go on but I'm not sure if this is helping.

this is of great help!

now, if you were to make a guess-who question to have Koreans guess who we are talking about what would it be (easy to guess!)

perhaps: "He is a student and a wizard?"

wha?

Nah, too broad. The wizards all go to Hogwarts which is a school for Wizards so they're all students and wizards. What about he's a young wizard whose parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. That's only leaves 2 characters that the kids would know of.

You could also say he lives with his aunt and uncle who make him live under the stairs and has a pet owl maybe.

One of the major appeals of Harry has been his ability to stay a nice person and to keep his humanity even though he has all the reasons in the world to be bitter. He was forced to live with his horrible Aunt and Uncle b/c they're litterally all the relation he has in the world and b/c Dumbledore believed that he needed protection from Voldemort's followers, the Death Eaters. He was able to chose from the very beginning the right friends Ron and Hermione, from the wrong, Malfoy and his crew.

One thing to keep in mind, he's not all powerful at least not yet. He's gotten through his adventures because he's made some good friends, and has made good decisions.

why would a kid prefer the first harry potter movie to the others? (how many were there exactly? how many more movies expected, any out this year? in production?)

i assume he's youngest in the first movie. what makes the first movie stand out compared to the others.

harry is a nice person, has good, loyal friends.... what good decisions did he make in the first movie?
