RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the formation of a new Palestinian government creates an "opportunity" for renewed peace moves.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for the new government after the Hamas militant group seized control of the Gaza Strip. In response, Abbas dissolved a coalition government between Hamas and his Fatah movement and appointed Salam Fayyad, a Western-backed economist, to form a new government.
"We have a new opportunity in the last few days that we haven't had in a long time," Olmert told reporters shortly before taking off for a trip the White House. "A government that is not Hamas is a partner."
Abbas got a major boost in his increasingly bellicose showdown with Hamas on Saturday, with a U.S. diplomat saying he expects a crippling 15-month-old foreign aid embargo to be lifted once the Palestinian president appoints an emergency government without the Islamic militants.
But the money is unlikely to reach Gaza, now controlled by Hamas and cut off from the world.
[I do feel sorry for the Gazans, but they largely are the ones who chose Hamas disproportionately, and the West Bankers turned their backs on them....] |
