Hey guys, I'm a Canadian and a few weeks ago I got this crazy idea of going to teach in Korea kicking around in my head. I've read tons about it, I have a friend there and its something that I really want to do.

I would like to start in Sept but the problem is, is that I don't yet have a passport. With the recent U.S descision to require a passport to travel between U.S/Canada there has been a rush of people trying to get them. People have said it has taken them anywhere from 3 to 10 weeks to get it back. I'm going to be dropping my application off at a passport center in a province over and from what i've been told that typically takes 3 weeks to process and have returned (since its not being mailed and I filled the application out online).

Anyway, my real question is can I apply for a job even if I have not received my passport yet? Most job advertisements don't outright ask for one, but of course I will need one. Will they accept that my passport is in process or will I have to wait until its fully processed to start applying? And if so, when does the Sept recruitment drive typically end? The earliest that I will have my passport is halfway through July which is cutting it close I know.

Any info you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you are looking for a public school job (the july/august recruitment) the deadline will be mid sept.

most places / recruiters require you to send a scanned copy of:
your diploma
your passport
your resume
BEFORE then even think about approaching a school.

ALL public school positions won't even look at you until you have those at a minimun. They will also require official university transcripts when you send your hard-copies for the visa application process.

A less than scrupulous recruiter MAY try to con you into a bad hakwon if you are unable to present the necessary documents.

There is no panic. 30,000 jobs per year and less than 25,000 applicants.

Wait, be patient, read the FAQs and watch the board for a month while you are waiting. It will do you a world of good and may save you a year of he11.

okay, so recruitment for Sept. jobs typically start in July and August? But the final deadline is mid sept? So if I were hired at a public school then I would heading out to Korea around mid sept?

I'll wait unitl I get my passport then, like I said, it should take around 3 weeks so that will leave me all part of july and all of august.

Thnks for the advise. And don't worry, hah, i'm been reading all the FAQs and stuff that I can find. I'm an ESL sponge Laughing

Spuddyj, it looks as though you have your act together. Doing your research well is very important. Stay patient and dont sign on to a crappy job. Research as deep as you can into the job. There is a lot of good advice to be found on this board. Get all of your documents together and get yourself a good job lined up. There are some good jobs to be found if you are patient and diligent.
