You spend an entire class stabbing yourself in the leg with a pen to stay awake out of boredom.

Or you're so bored that you begin daydreaming what it'd be like to quit the hagwon life and apply for a job at a 24-hour convenience store. What the going rate at Family Mart these days?

Yeah the kids stab me with their pens also when I fall asleep. Right nice of the little rotters to take care of their teacher like that.

You know you are burnt out when you teach a whole class and suddenly just can't remember what even happened and spend ten minutes in total confusion thinking you still have to teach the class till your next class walks in and you immediately shut your brain down again and repeat the process.

Not to mention creating huge run on sentences on daves.

......one of your classes comes in and you break out the same material and lesson plan you used last class. Believe it or not, this has happened to me twice in the last month. I forgot that I had covered that already. Admittedly, I'm fried. My contract is up in 3 weeks and I'm taking a much needed sabbatical back in Canada. I've even had many of my students look at me and say,"teacher...tired?". I've been in Korea for 2 years and I've enjoyed my experience here, but I'm definitely ready to leave now.

You know you're burnt out when you finish your last day of English camp and you're not even happy about it.

That's me today.

You haven't used your brain for anything more than browsing the internet for a week and can't sleep all night because it's ticking over like a 2 stroke motor.

... A student playfully asks: "Teacher, you crazy???"
And my response is: "Yes. I live and work here, don't I?"

I knew I was burnt out in Hong Kong when I was standing at the crosswalk thinking that...'if I just let that bus graze me...I bet I could get a couple weeks in the hospital...now that would be so much better than going to work..."

It was soon after that that we decided to return to Korea.
