| Whats to debate here? Seems to me you have a choice. Give them what they want or not. One is an easy but uncomfortable way to the solution. The other one will have consequences, which might include you getting fired. Its a choice you have to make. if it was me I would not give them the death certificates. If they dont trust me then I just move on. Plenty of jobs out there. |

The problem with the 'My (insert family member here) died excuse is that you always have to remember not to mention that person again. Even the 'My (insert family member here) is in the hospital' gets sticky because you have to remember what ailment they had.
Bosses know you're lying; they're hip to the game -- hey what are you gonna do -- make the poor guy give you a death certificate or a note from the hospital? |

Have to agree with Jinju.
Considering how far you have to travel and the expense of it all, I can't believe that they would think you were doing anything else besides a very difficult thing such as visiting a very sick relative.
I say *beep* 'em. Go home, stay with your dad and come back for a public school job. I hear they are hiring now.
What a bunch of assholes |

Did you take the 7 days leave of absence with pay for the death of a family member? If you did then they are entitled to see proof that a family member died. It is no different from home.
Show the proof.
Same with the time off for you to go to your father.
They also require proof (doctors certificate) if you take a week of sick leave with pay.
Where is the problem? Amazing coincidence that this all happens within 2 months and you had no inkling of this when you accepted a job 1/2 a planet away from home.
Damn, those foreigners die off fast and you would be amazed how many of them can have the same parent die year after year.
Sorry if this lacks the sympathy that you were seeking but really....
without the proof, I wouldn't trust you either. |

All that I would say is don't take it personally ... I am not suprised that they have asked for the 'proof' because I would have expected the same thing to have happened if I was in a job at home ... I would just accept it as something that I needed to do as part of the red tape involved in taking some special types of leave ... I see it as red tape rather than 'I don't believe you' prove it ...
Just go and see your dad ... and then worry about the red tape ... Don't let any of this take away from what you need to do now .... Red tape is just that red tape ... it will still be there ....

When I had a job back in the states, my uncle died and I asked for leave to attend his funeral. My boss asked for proof that there was a funeral and that my uncle was actually dead.
I wanted to stick the proof up his a$$, because he told me I was not telling him the truth. When he came to work the next morning the proof was on his desk and he never said another work to me about the funeral. |
