Re: weekend English camp

I was just informed by one of my co-workers that the Incheon Office of Education is looking for English native speakers to attend a weekend English camp on an island not far from Incheon. The camp dates are Friday July 13th to Wednesday July 17th. I suspect that those going to the camp will be returning in the morning of July 17th(a national holiday). I was asked to give them my decision NOW within minutes of being informed of the camp. Details are little to none. I was told that I really did not have to attend if I did not want to(but, they would like me to).I like how they want you to commit to something with question. Especially when they fail to mention anything about compensation for attending the camp. Coercive persuasion is what they call it. I'm most concerned about not receiving any compensation for attending this camp.(6 days , 5 nights).

I also have another camp which I must attend from July 23rd to July 27th here in Incheon. This camp is organized by the Incheon Office of Education. In addition to this camp, ther will be an English camp at our public school in August(the dates are not fixed yet). There will be a conflict with my vacation dates- I have asked for Aug 10th(Fri), Aug 13/14 and Aug16/17 which is five WORKING DAYS. I'm suppose to get seven Working Days.

an update later...

Easy answer..... No details = "No, I won't give you an answer on short notice and I won't give an answer without more details".

I would advise against the 6 day - 5 night camp.

If you were working a private residential / overnight camp (like on your holiday) it would be worth a million won. I suspect that you will NOT receive any significant compensation like this from the school board.

SAY NO.

In regards to the other camps... assuming you gave lots of notice for your vacation time and the camps were NOT on the annual schedule, tell them that you have bought tickets out of the country for your vacation and they have to change the dates or you will quit effective that date and take your flight anyway.

If they mumble about not giving you a release and you can't work elsewhere simply tell them that there are lots of jobs in China and Japan where you don't have to put up with crap like this.

They will back down.

Sometimes the public schools and the co-teachers in particular forget that they have contracts that they have to honor and that we are NOT Korean and won't back down on their whim. Stand up and say no.

You can replace them far easier than they can replace you.
