I've been sat looking at these two page of the Middle School English Book as used by GEPIK teachers (i believe) for about 30 minutes.

The exercises are a bloody joke. Whoever Stephen P. van Vlack is he is most certainly not very good at planning exercises in books.

Quote:
Look at the pictures and think about the words in the blanks. Then talk to your friend.

A. I hope I take first place in the Marathon. Keep your fingers crossed.
B. Good luck to you. I'm sure you will take the first place in the Marathon.

A. I want to lose weight. Keep your fingers crossed
B.______________ ________________________

A. I want to get a hundred points on the next English test. Keep your fingers crossed.
B._____________._________________________________

A. I want her to call me first. Keep your fingers crossed.
B_______________.__________________________

Quote:
Good luck to you.

I wish you luck.

Maybe you'll have good luck.

Believe in yourself

Who says believe in yourself other than a harrikishna type in Newcastle town center on a Saturday match day.

On the other page

Quote:

I don't study English very hard.
B. If I were you, I would study English very hard

It just doesn't sound right to me. Maybe I'm getting confused and have forgotten how to speak English.

The title of this chapter BTW - Healthy Eating and Physical Fitness.

Load of bloody bollocks.[/quote]

It does sound a bit stilted and unnatural.

But that style of exercise is very common on the English exams at my school.

I have to use this god awful book with Gi-ho and Su-mi. The Grade one book is terrible, the Grade two book is somehow even worse. If you use the same books, you know the ones I'm talking about. I can't imagine what was going through the head of the "Professor" who wrote these books.

isnt that the problem with the public schools? outdated textbooks and thats why students don't pay much attention and are 'wild' (how my coteacher puts it).

Only 2nd years are wild.

The others are great (well as great as students can be)

I've still not got a good grasp of the pages yet or how I'm going to supplement or change it completely.

Just can't see anything of use on there.

Possibly an exercise on advice.

Save the advice lesson for lesson 4 (Ms Wise what should I do?)

After studying the dialogue in the usual fashion, I'm planning to turn my classroom into a mini-gym and some of the students will be doing workout exercises.

We will run through body parts first, then I'll be using a cool little exercise I found in another book (Reading Extra by Liz Driscoll). The students recieve written directions for 6 different exercise routines, and have to match the routines to the appropriate pictures of said routines. Once they are all matched up, I'll be calling volunteers to the front to do the actual routines.

I'm lucky enough to have the space in my classroom to make this possible, and with some thumping gym-style 4/4 beats coming out of my speakers I'm pretty sure it will be good fun.

I agree though, these textbooks are a total bag of $hite.

I've just looked at chapter 3.

What the bloody hell is it about?

Any ideas?

The book goes from poor to abysmal.

mrsquirrel,
I am teaching the same book as you. I am supposed to teach certain sections, but I have just decided to create my own lessons with my own materials, using the book as a guide to what the class wil be covering.

The van Vlack dude must have been in pain to have written garbage like that !

I am doing my best to write lessons which use key language from the book. Some of the spoken audio parts of the cd-rom are actually not bad for listening exercises.

I'm absolutely lost as to what they are expecting from chapter 3. I've spoken with my co-teacher and she doesn't like it much either. The chapter before was simple enough - Health and Fitness.

The first chapter was easy as well and the fourth chapter is clear.

Chapter 3? It just isn't clear what the kids are meant to get out of it other than rapid boredom and a total dislike for the English language.

I think it's time to Google that K nut van Vlack and see what he is all about.

Lesson 3.

Who the hell is Paul Bunyan?

Perhaps Monty Pythons 'lumberjack song' could liven this up a little bit...

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.
I sleep all night. I work all day.

Mounties : He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.

Mounties: He cuts down trees. He eats his lunch.
He goes to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping
And has buttered scones for tea.

Chorus : I'm (He's) a lumberjack, and I'm (he's) okay.
I (He) sleep(s) all night and I (he) work(s) all day.

I cut down trees. I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars.

Mounties : He cuts down trees. He skips and jumps.
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around in bars?!

Chorus : I'm (He's) a lumberjack, and I'm (he's) okay.
I (He) sleep(s) all night and I (he) work(s) all day.

I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie,
Just like my dear Mama (or Papa in later versions)

Mounties : He cuts down trees. He wears high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra?!

Chorus : I'm (He's) a lumberjack, and I'm (he's) okay.
I (He) sleep(s) all night and I (he) work(s) all day.

Yes, I'm (He's) a lumberjack, and I'm (he's) ok-a-y.
I (He) sleep(s) all night and I (he) work(s) all day.

Don't let Babe the Blue Ox hear you say that. Or Pecos Bill either, for that matter.
