With respect, that's a pretty broad dead club. Most people are dead. I tend to think about the great people who lived their lives and received no recognition of greatness.
But, in keeping theme with the post--the first people that come to my mind (besides the obvious like Michelangelo, etc.) are Jim Morrison, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert S. De Ropp ... I cant continue because there are so many.
Reminds me of an essay by RWE; to paraphrase: To be great is to be misunderstood. (from his essay Self Reliance).
My response to this post is about as refined as the question itself.
How about--who are the living greats? And how do we define "great?" Is it humanitarian endeavors, art, exceptional entrepreneurs, etc?
How about the great family man or woman who raises the most valuable crop on this earth--our youth.
I'm rambling. I do this when I don't have a specific subject to focus on.
By the way, I am great in my own special way as is everyone on this planet.
To be great do you have to be famous? I don't think so. |

Shannon Hoon. I still think he was the greatest vocal talent of my generation. |

I saw Blind Melon in Cinci, Ohio right after their first album was released. It was a great show. *Those were the days*
Favorite album: Nico, favorite song: John Sinclair (Composer: John Lennon) |

I like Vernie. That was my fav song for a long while. Nico was a great disc, though. |

Allen Ginsberg
I met him in Toronto less than a year before he died and he seemed like your everyday kooky university professor, deep, quiet, careful with his words, civil.
His answers to my questions were unsatisfying and trite. I was expecting illumination and something special.
Oh well. |
