Usually when I fly from Detroit to Narita, I have a couple-hour layover in Japan before my flight to Kimhae. However, this time my flight out of Detroit is a couple hours later (NW11, 3:30 p.m.). Because of that, there is a fifty minute difference between my plane landing at Narita (5:25 p.m.) and my next one heading for Kimhae (NW29, 6:15 p.m.); that is not much of a margin. As anyone who has arrived at Narita knows, it is a bit of a trek from the arriving plane, through Japanese security, and on to the next flight.
I called NW to see what would happen if, for some reason, I wasn't at the gate when the plane was set to go. Would the plane wait? She said, "No, of course not." She further said, "This is the schedule we set up and we do it day after day." I mentioned that for me it is a concern, as I usually had time between flights and this leaves very little time. She said, "We can do what-ifs all day, but this is what the schedule is."
My question is, has anyone else taken that flight at that time, and did you have any problems getting to the next flight? It would certainly complicate things if the flight to Kimhae takes off without me, as my wife is coming (from Kyongju) to pick me up and I might not be able to contact her before she left.
Thanks in advance. |

I've done that exact trip three times, but only once with the time allowance you are refering to.
It was tight, and I panicked a bit, but it worked out. I'll never do that again.
I think you should have asked that NW agent if it would be possible to accomplish, instead of the 'what if' questions. |

If it's at the end of the month, there may not be a NWA flight at all, and your problem is solved. Kinda. |

yeah, that is one tight transfer...
I am sure you also know that narita is served by 2 terminals so if they are in the same one it might make it a bit easier....if not, then good luck with it all.
I wouldn't be risking it personally unless the flight is a lot lot cheaper than anything else...anything less that 90 mins i find plays too much on the brain.
i did miss a flight with a connection of 75 mins once due to a delay on the first flight. if there is one small delay you are screwed. |

The connecting flight is in the same terminal, in the same wing. At least it was the past three times I've flown that route.
Northwest and Contintental share the same spoke in the terminal. |

Actually, my first question to her was if such a connection is possible, to which she kept saying, "We do that exact schedule every day." As that did not really answer the question, I started asking her for hypotheticals. I really would have preferred my previous schedule where the flight left Detroit around 12:30 or so. I don't like tight schedules. |

Hmmm. And why do you say that? |

It's supposed to be getting better, but I'm not optimistic about flying at the end of the month.

NWA head: Airline has 'laser-like focus' on fixing flight woes
August 1, 2007
BY MARGARITA BAUZA
FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER
Northwest Airlines CEO Doug Steenland today apologized once again for flight cancellations at the end of June and July that left thousands of customers stranded across the country.
He said the airline, which canceled hundreds of flights in both June and July, had agreed to require less monthly flight time from pilots starting this month. Pilots nearing their maximum allowed hours failed to report to work toward the end of the last two months, forcing the cancellations. |

Northwest Airlines flight cancellation rate soars
Mon Jul 30, 2007 2:13PM EDT
CHICAGO, July 30 (Reuters) - Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) canceled an unusually high number of flights over the weekend, blaming a spike in pilot absenteeism for the disruption.
The No. 5 U.S. airline said it could not give a reason for the high rate of absenteeism, but the union representing the pilots has linked it to inadequate staffing during the peak summer travel season. |

NWA cancellations hit Metro hardest
Nathan Hurst / The Detroit News
This summer, Northwest passengers have weathered a cancellation rate that far exceeded that of other major U.S. carriers, as the airline struggled to staff a heavy summer flying schedule with fewer pilots than in years past.
While Northwest officials blamed the cancellations in June and July on a higher-than-normal rate of pilot absenteeism, union officials said many pilots were running into the 90-hour cap early in the month because of staff shortages it had warned the airline about months ago. |

Not enough pilots. And it's not really affecting international flights.

I'll be heading back this next Monday, so I wouldn't worry about the end of the month anyway... |

Oh, yeah. Unlike you, I'm not starting my flight in Detroit. |
