my wife and daughter and i are flying to the states on tuesday.
we've just finished packing one bag, and it's really really heavy.
between me and my wife, we should be allowed 4 checked bags, right? it seems to me that it's better for everyone if we just brought one heavy bag, rather than 3 or 4 lighter bags. but i know airlines tend to be pretty stupid and rigid in their reasoning.
has anyone else faced this?

Would you think this if you were a baggage handler whose job it is to lift 'really really heavy' bags, one after another.
I don't see anything stupid about airlines' reasoning on this one.

i don't think i'd mind it if i were a strong enough guy to be a baggage handler in the first place. especially if the amount of bags i had to handle were decreased by two thirds.
the whole process should be automated by now anyway. machines wouldn't whine about heavy bags, and they wouldn't steal things from out of the bags, and they wouldn't carelessly throw the bags around and break what's inside, and they wouldn't send the bags to the wrong cities.

okay, so now i'm the one whining. but i really hate what a pain in the ass air travel is in this day and age. i hate everything about air travel. if there were a giant bridge across the pacific, i'd seriously consider driving back and forth to korea.

anyway... we've repacked. now we have the same stuff in three bags instead of one. that's three times the volume, and a little heavier when the weight of the two extra bags are counted in. *sigh*

Just be glad that you are not travelling to some where non north american. 20kg max per person yes per person not per bag.

Does any body know the reason behind this?

Your best bet is to check the website for whatever airline you are flying with. They should have a listing as to size and weight limit for your baggage. That was what I did when I came here.

Yep, two 50 pound check on bags no larger than 62 linear inches and 1 carry on and a personal item such as a briefcase with your laptop in it on flights going to and from America. This is a more generous allowance than allowed on flights to and from non-American points. You can always pay like several hundred Dollars more at check in for a 3rd check on bag or to ship other things like sporting equipment.

Fuel costs are very high for airlines in places like SE Asia that might have cheap fares on account of operating in less developed economies while paying western prices for fuel.

Yes, I read that if you're going to travel in SE Asia and other parts, you're limited to 20KG of stuff which includes your one carry on article and your one check on bag. Some small airlines won't even take you if you got a check on bag, but still within the 20KG limit. So it's best to just take a carry on backpack with you and nothing else more than the clothes your wearing. Now what to do with all this stuff I have here? Purge it? Dig a hole on the side of the mountain in the woods to bury it as storage and go back to retrieve at the beginning of a new contract? Ship it home? Sell it?

I checked and the website for my airline had 40 lbs.
I got to the airport before the check in was staffed and used their scales
to weigh. We took stuff out to get me under 40 lbs, but then when
the staff arrived they told me the limit was 50 lbs. I think they
were confusing domestic with international. They also pointed out
that one of their scales was off by about 5 lbs. Should I have put
my stuff back in? Do they weigh again or are you safe if the
check in staff takes your bag?

It depends on the airline.

Many of the carriers going stateside only allow 2 bags of 50 lbs. each and maximum linear dimensions of 62 inches.

SOME carriers still allow the old limit of 2 bags, 62 inches and 70 lbs each.

Check with your carrier about checked luggage. They do tend to be absolutely ANAL about size and weight limits.

You can check oversize / over weight bags but the cost gets prohibative.

The pain in flying is the phony, useless and overexaggerated airport security.
Limitations on baggage serves 2 purposes, first the per bag limit prevents certain people like the OP, to pack in excess of what a baggage handler/human being can lift.
Yes, it's their job to lift heavy bags, but as you know, THERE ARE limitations to protect workers from injury.
The other reason is to prevent people who can't even carry their oversized luggage from blocking everyone else behind them.

I dont see the logic in packing 1 big suitcase for 3 ppl rather than have a few smaller suitcases. Imagine the logistics in moving one mammoth compared to 3 horses....which is easier?

As for airline regulations, people on here spend too much of their time on the net, might as well just spend 5 minutes of that on the airlines' website und look up 'baggage allowance'.

the big problem now with just bringing a carry on is the restrictions on liquids/gels being brought on board most airlines are enforcing the US restictions anywhere they fly including all flight out of ICN, you are only allowed to bring a tiny amount of toothpaste/shampoo etc on board. they dont care if you check it though so more people are now checking bags which are forcing the airlines to impose tighter weight restrictions
