Do you mean Korean National Holidays? Normally no. It should say something in your contract like you are entitled to X amount of holiday per year including all Korean National Holidays.
HOWEVER, I have heard of hogwans which make their employes work on National holidays and sometimes they get another day of in lieu and sometimes they don't.

Yes, I was wondering if you normally got korean holidays off at a hagwon. or if you worked. I was wondering if hagwons were open on korean holidays and the teachers taught and the kids had to go to hagwon on holidays. thanks

Never worked on a national holiday. That is not to say that all hagwons are the same. Some do work on national holidays. Smile

What does it say in your labor contract? You're entitled to observed ALL public holidays. The problems start when teachers sign labor contracts stipulating they'll work on a Korean National Holiday to satisfy the needs of the students.

I know a place like that, but I don't think the teachers were told beforehand.

I had that one pulled on me a few years back. No warning or anything in the contract about it. I just told them my contract says Monday to Friday only so, sorry.

That's outrageously ridiculous that they could even think of making you work a Saturday to make up a holiday! I would be very disappointed and unhappy about that as hagwons typically max you out at 30 teaching hours a week and only offer 10 working days vacation a year. Because hagwons are hectic non-stop places to work with very little breaks, stress levels rise which makes necessary communications between KT's and FT's very stressful in itself. This hectic full time schedule and associated tensions make kids rotten, sullen, unmotivated, and unhappy which wears on the FT's trying to get them to listen, obey, and actively engaged in school activities. More time off makes very intelligent sense for the kids and teachers alike. It's foolish to school 250 to 300 days a year many hours a day like hagwons do as teaching and studying are very different than most other jobs in regards that it requires intense mental efforts. I chose not to be any sort of business manager, particularly a floor manager of any sort, who is expected to never take a vacation for these very reasons. Vacation time is something public school seems to do properly according to many posts here, because everyone needs to take a break and mentally recharge in order to be at their best. We all need a well balanced life of working hard and playing hard to live life to greater potentials which is why education has high regards in many countries.
