I am an American and da-mn proud of it. When the final chapter in the history of the last century is written, it will show that without American intervention, it would have been far more hellish than it turned out to be.

I realize this makes Canucks cringe and Brits wince, but so be it.

And to add to the evidence of American largesse, consider that once again an international survey of the Charitable Aid Foundation (this time from the Foundation for Philanthropy at Indiana University) has found us to be the most generous people on the planet. Not only in absolute numbers, i.e., the total sum of all donations, but more importantly as a percentage of GNP, the U.S. ranks first, far surpassing the next closest nation, the U.K.

Here is the ranking:

1. U.S.A.
2. U.K.
3. Canada
4. Australia
5. South Africa
6. Ireland
7. Netherlands
8. Singapore
9. New Zealand
10. Turkey
11. Germany
12. France

Read it and weep, all you leftist American bashers on this board.

Why would we weep for people doing good things? We weep for people doing bad things.

Why do you set up every post you make as a trap, where everyone is forced to either agree with your political leanings or been painted as being in support of whatever awful thing you've decided to tar everyone with?

Why are you so sneaky and intellectuality dishonest, Steve? Just because the clowns on Fox News are?

and connect the dots as to why the federal government does not feel the need to do the things that Americans do by themselves.

I suppose other countries, who have less motivated populations, must tax their passive populations and THEN transfer monies around to the less fortunate.

In order to point out that they are doing MORE THAN [the] AMERICA [N government] to alleviate suffering.

Well done Chaps!!

America and Americans have an outstanding tradition of philanthropy and private giving. One of the many things that make America great. I myself give small amounts to NPR and alumni scholarship funds.

It is nice to know that we are not the cold-hearted, over-consuming gluttons Michael Moore paints us to be.

But I did not post this story on the thread Mithridates refs in order to gloat or put-down others. And I do not believe we ought to do so on this thread, either.

Two things:

1. you know you're not doing well as a country when you're the most powerful, richest, influential nation in the world and your citizens feel the need to post/write things like this for a sense of self-verification, while also attacking others in the process.

2. self-congratulations is no congratulations at all...

Why didn't Steve show the percentages?

The US contributes 1.67% of its GDP, and the UK comes in at second with 0.73% of its GDP. Germany and France give under .25% of their GDP.

Private giving seems to be primarily strong in the Commonwealth and America, but elsewhere, particularly in Germany and France, it is an afterthought. A powerful explanation for this might lie in the tax code. In America charitable contributions are fully deductable, and in Canada you can actually get a limited tax credit up to a certain amount. Meanwhile, the overall tax take in Germany and France are at least half of income, whereas in the Anglo-American world, it hovers around 30%.

While Americans certainly appear generous, it is also quite obvious that they have the most favorable tax regime for private giving. This is good news for countries that lag in private giving, because it suggests that the issue may be governed at least as much by tax incentives as it is by culture.

I don't think any Brits or Canucks are cringing. In fact, as a proud Canadian, I am happy with our 3rd place. That's well generous enough.

I bet at the bottom of that list, you find asian countries (excluding Singapore)

As well you should be. An excellent standing.
