just wondered if immigration really act upon hearing of teachers doing private lessons.
can hogwans pass them a nice brown envelope if they're keen to hold on to the teacher in question?

I'm kinda new too, but from what I've heard:

Someone has to snitch. Pretty secondhand, I heard about one guy who refused to marry his Korean girlfriend, so she ratted him out in a huff and he got deported. And of course, in Taejon (maybe elsewhere?), the government is offering cash rewards for people who tattle.

"can hogwans pass them a nice brown envelope if they're keen to hold on to the teacher in question?"

Not sure I understand the question, but I think you're asking whether or not a hagwon can bribe the government to not deport a teacher giving private lessons. They don't need to. Any private lessons you give with the school's blessing are legal. All the hagwon has to do is say they were cool with it. (And then probably you'll have to file some paperwork on the lessons you were caught giving, so the gov't can tax you....) But your Hagwon probably wouldn't back you up. They're very poor sports about that sort of thing. A public school might back you up if you promised not to do it again.

This is not true. Unless the work is registered with immigration, it's illegal for people like us to do it.

Maybe Ttompatz can back me up here (and if he refutes me, I'll defer to his wisdom).

Your user name is 'newintown' yet you say you are not new in town.

Now, we're supposed to believe your not a guy!

That would be the Hogwan Association in Daejeon, not the government.

You mean like pay them on the side to do their jobs? Laughing

Beware of apt guards...treat them w/ respect and perhaps buy them some fruit or booze once in a while if they know what you're doing at their building. Play it LOW KEY!

I was going to say that.

The government, or immigration, does not offer any reward.

This is such bad advice. If you dont know, just dont give out ANY advice.

For E2s

1. Privates are illegal
2. ALL work outside the location listed on your ARC is 100% illegal unless OKed by IMMIGRATION. They decide what is legal and illegal, NOT your hagwon. This also goes for any extra work at any other hagwon. If your school sends you to work elsewhere without Immigration's permission, guess what, you are working illegally.

Great advice. Always give 'em a polite greeting on the way in and out. Used to do this out on Yeoido back in the day, and never had any problems with the desk ajosshis. Did see a few other expats get the evil eye though 'cause they just rolled on in ignoring the lowly ajosshi. Also helps sometimes if you can meet your student the first few times down in the lobby.

Never had a problem. Amazing how a little respect thrown his way will pay back in the future. Even got an extra private referral once from the ajosshi guard. No doubt play it low key, but it's funny how you can develop a 6th sense about people.

buying the guards something is not low key. Just walk into the place like you belong, leave your books at the student's house, and don't talk about the privates you do. It is illegal unless you have an F2 or F5 visa.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked yet. Check out the sticky on privates.

i did them for 4 years. u have to change up the times and days esp. if the building u are going to has a security booth outside. those guys get "bonuses" if they rat out a foreigner. Neoghbors might get into the act too if they are assholes and know what they can get if they tattle. i never had a problem
