although, fairly competent as a user of computer/internet related services and such, I am pretty ignorant when in comes to the creative side of anything related to computers and the internet.

still, i am trying to learn how to create an internet forum (similar to dave's esl, abeit in a much smaller scale).
the bit of research i've done on the internet has not been too fruitful, as the majority of the information out there seems geared for those with the savy and jargon-vocabulary, which i lack.

can anyone suggest any good resources/advice for the complete novice to get started in creating a web forum?

thanks!

There are some sites that will host forums for you (Ezboards is one).

But it sounds like you'd rather set up said forums on your own..

Well, in that case you will need a SQL Server (a Database) running on your host machine -- most hosting services have SQL as a standard feature. Then you need to have some kind of Forum software. PhpBB (what Daves uses) is the most common, and easy to set up in my opinion. Of course if you're using phpBB then your host will also need to support PHP, again something that any reasonable host is going to offer standard.

Once you have that all sorted out, it's simply a matter of following your Forum software's instructions. phpBB isn't hard to get up and running, but it can really really be customized and tweaked and made more (or less) secure if you really feel like it..

Here's a quick link I found:

Not sure if it's any good but seems just up your alley.

as a complete n00b i would advise you to use www.myfreeforum.com, they will host it for free for you and give you a decent control panel and excellent support staff. That way you can run it for a trial period at no cost, and if you want to transfer the forum to your own server at a later date they will also do this for you for a small cost
