I just went to Seoul for the first time in months. I live in the countryside of Korea, quite far from the city scene. The girls in Seoul are so much better looking. They even have all thier teeth, mostly. Not only that, but some were actually wearing shorts and I could see thier skin. one girl even had part of her bossom exposed and I saw cleavage! And just like a dusty bank vault slamming shut, my weekend was over and I came back to the countryside land of three-eyeballed women...

Yeah, I hear that. I live in the sticks now as well, having moved here for a better job and clean air, but man! there's a lot of two-toed fleshy-headed mutants in these parts. It's like the first half of 'Deliverance' but with no idiot-savant banjo pluckers. Nary a gayageumist in sight, neither; here they're all into pop-ballads and trot.
Maybe your town and mine should arrange a swap meet--most of our folks got just the one eye each, but about sixty teeth; maybe we can set up a barter, all your tertiary orbs for our excess ivories...

South Koreans turn to overseas brides

More and more South Koreans are marrying foreigners due to a shortage of local brides and a change in Koreans' attitudes, according to government figures released on Thursday.

The statistics showed the number of marriages to foreigners jumped 21.6 per cent to 43,121 last year, compared with 2004 figures.

Out of every 100 newly weds, 13.6 couples were married to foreigners, according to the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Yang Soon-Mi, senior researcher at the Rural Resource Development Institute, said international marriages are on the increase due to a shortage of South Korean brides and a change in South Koreans' perceptions of foreigners.

As of the end of 2000, there were 105 Korean men for 100 women, she said.

The NSO said 72 per cent of international marriages involved South Korean men and foreign women. Chinese brides topped the list at 66.2 per cent, followed by Vietnamese with 18.7 per cent and Japanese with 4.0 per cent.

The number of South Korean men marrying Vietnamese women jumped by 136.5 per cent to 5,822 last year, the NSO said, compared to a mere 95 in 2000.

Marriages between foreign women and Koreans engaged in farming, fishing or forestry rose from 1,814 in 2004 to 2,885 last year, the NSO said.

This means that out of every 1,000 South Korean farmers who married last year, 359 married foreign women compared with 274 the previous year, it said.

Yang said that due to the country's economic strength, increasing numbers of women in other Asian countries tend to develop "illusions about (South) Korea and they are willing to marry Koreans for their Korean Dream."

"(South) Koreans' conservative perceptions about foreigners have also been changing as there are growing numbers of exchanges with other countries and many Koreans travel or study abroad," she said.

She warned, however, that foreign brides often face serious problems adapting to a new life in a country with a different culture and atmosphere.

Aside from cultural differences and language barriers, foreign women feel heavily burdened because of the sacrifices and role expected of them as a wife, mother and daughter-in-law in a traditionally Confucian society, she said.

"There were even some cases in which foreign brides were subjected to violence by their spouses. They either flee to shelters for them or return home," said Yang.

After stories about Filipinas who fled from their violence-prone South Korean husbands became known in the Philippines, professional agents found it increasingly difficult to find prospective brides there.

"Then they turned to Viet Nam. That's why the number of Vietnamese brides has been increasing so fast over the past few years," Yang said.

Maybe that's why farmers are marrying foreign women so much. Three eyeballs and two heads. *yikes*

It's a good idea, this trade of yours. But my town is "famous" for having those extra orbs in a very special way... Didn't you know about the orbs here? There is a big statue of an oozing orb in the town center. People come from Seoul every summer season to partake in the oozing orb festival. They have a huge, 3 day market with vendors from an international country (india), too, at that time... I dont think my town wants to fracture its significance in Korea by giving up that for which it is most famous. Sorry

Yeah, not only do Korean guys in the countryside tend to marry foreign brides, but just the other day someone was telling me that the divorce rate in the countryside is actually higher. I thought it seemed a bit counterintuitive... Like maybe since divorce is a more western and progressive idea, it would be happening more in the city. But apparently, in the countryside, too many guys can't afford a wife so whereas before the dark liberal era of late when divorce was illegal and the woman was forced to stay and endure, now the woman can simply leave and go become a da bang girl....

A few more descriptions like this of backwoods Korea, this could make for "Thread of the Year."

Hell, if you changed gayageumist to fiddle player and changed trot to bluegrass I'd think it was my hometown he was describing!

In my town, the girls generally go bald quite young, so they carry around a selection of toupees and mirkins (pubal wigs) in a nifty convenient satchel.
Now, it may look like she's wearing a really ugly pair of shorts, but actually that's her naked ass. Something in the water here I guess...

Here is the champion of the Ms. Pretty Eye 2007 contest. She won a new pubal wig and a glass eye.

Haha. I remember taking a trip out to the sticks in Gangwon Province. The chicks were all wearing sweatpants and trucker caps. Pretty rough looking. Seeing hot chicks in mini-skirts around Gangnam Station in Seoul everyday is like being on another planet.

Yeah, my town is disproportionately ugly. Every once in a while I'll see somebody borderline attractive. But when I visit other neighboring towns I always see more human scenery. Oh well, as they eke out their living on a farm or running a convenience store in their front room I doubt they're too concerned about being attractive. I'll tell you, though, that Suncheon is a very attractive city.

Totally in agreement with the OP's post. I've been out of the country for six weeks (in Thailand, of all places!) and after 2 days back I feel completely justified in telling everyone that I met in Thailand that Korean girls are "hot." It's interesting, most of the foreigners that I met thought I was a fool for saying this. They were like "no man, these Thai chicks are the most beautiful in the world!" But the Thai guys that I spoke to were all in agreement with me. After 2 days back in the country, and a stroll around Gangnam today, I know I am right.

Huh? You're attracted to a city? Dude, that's just weird. I don't even think there's a name for that.
Ok, I googled it, and it turns out you are the only one the whole world who wants to hump a city. Is it even physically possible? I mean, how can you...you know..."do it?"
Not to mention it'd be incredibly expensive to take it home to meet the folks.
Why not pick a more accessible target for your affection, like, maybe, the moon?
Sigh...then again...with all the hate in this world, who am I to criticize how two things choose to love one another? I change my mind! Go ahead, Smee...I wish you two all the happiness in the world.
