My CT gave me my schedule for the end of July and August and it looks like everything is resolved with the camp that they were trying to make me attend. Instead, I'll be teaching a 4 week camp at my school.

If the students at my school have to pay to attend the camp, am I entitled to any of that money? I thought I read a while back that I should be able to get a certain percentage, though I don't know how much. Anyone familiar with this?

PS teachers get extra money for this sort of thing all the time. They may give you an hourly rate; they may give you all the money that comes in; or you may get no extra money and it will just be considered part of your monthly duties for your monthly wage.

That's probably not in your contract. Unless you are working overtime, you won't see any of that money.

It also depends on the school. This is an easy way for your school to give you a little bonus.

It's not in my contract and I don't expect to receive anything, but if they're paying for the camp then I thought I might bring the issue up with the school. I heard this is the same type of thing that happens with after school classes that the Korean teachers teach. If students are paying, the teacher gets part of that.

Exactly but be very careful and tactful about how you ask.

Contractually, the school has the privilege of scheduling a series of classes during your break period and you must work your regular duties stipulated in the contract. HOWEVER, in some cases the school can be flexible enough to share some of the revenue they receive for these classes/camps. I usually try and schedule my break time away from the school, because if I teach at an offsite camp in another school I actually get paid from them rather than not being paid by my school where I teach here...

It hasn't been a problem in the high school I teach for...

I cant remember where i read it last, but someone mentioned that due to the fact schools are non profit anything brought in for camps has to be given to the foreign teacher conducting the camp. The schools cannot make revenue off it. I will have to search where i saw this at the first time but i am pretty sure its correct. Worth a shot anyways.

I remember reading on here that it was illegal for the school to accept money for the camps. That the money had to be spent or given to the teacher.

So you are now going to teach more than the 20 hours of camps designated during your school break.

For free as well.

No, my school finally worked something out with the camp being run at some university so I don't have to teach there anymore. I'm going to teach first and second grade students at my school, 4 classes a day, so 20 a week.

Yes, I suppose that I'm teaching for "free" as you put it, but I would rather teach 20 a week vs. 70 at the university camp.

Mehamrick - If you can find any info about the not for profit thing that would help me out when I ask my school about this.

I read this as well. Haha. But I've known more than one principal to pocket extra money for an after school class or camps. Since the tuition of these things is so low no one thinks much about it. But it's a nice chunk of change for the big guy, when added all up. Be careful how you bring this up, because if you're taking this money out of the principal's wallet (no matter how illegal or immoral), don't expect any favors down the road.

I'm sure my contract only says 40 hours for summer vacation. Are you teaching 80 then over your four weeks?

I didn't pipe in when you brought up your problems with the other camp, but I was wondering if they'd pull something like this. I'll be very surprised if they pay you for this.
