To start: Here's the link--- http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/06/28/protest-aboriginal.html
At what point is something not 'society's' fault anymore?
For those not reading the article, aboriginals in Canada are setting up 'blockades' along some of the major transportation routes in Canada/ontario/TO-MTL.
The reason?
Quote: |
The Assembly of First Nations designated Friday as a National Day of Action to draw attention to the issues facing Canada's aboriginal communities, including poverty, soaring high school dropout rates, high suicide rates and unresolved land claims. |
Other than unresolved land claims every single one of those is a self-created problem. For example; it's not easy to find a job if you drop out of high school, thus you have poverty. And if I dropped out of HS and was living in poverty, suicide might cross my mind too.
The historical wrongs done to aboriginal populations are well documented and in some issues such as land claims, persist to this day. But the other problems are not my responsibility. I can't help but think that if certain leaders stepped up in a similar capacity to men like Morgan Freeman and Bill Cosby, than people might start behaving differently.
One chooses to drop out of HS, one chooses to end their own life, and similarly, any substance abuse problem is a CHOICE someone makes.
Responsibility and accountability are the keys to success, and with both of those things lacking this 'blockade' is doomed to fail. The fault dear brutus is not in the stars, but in ourselves.
