My HD is too small for everyday purposs and I'd like to get a bigger one. Can anyone explain the issues in doing this? I'd like to keep all of the software I currently have on my machine.
Any tutorials, advice, whatever would be a big help. Thanks. |

The cheapest and easiest solution would be to get an EXTERNAL HDD in whatever size you want. They are easy to use (plug into the USB port), about the same price (or cheaper) than a replacement norebook HDD, and you don't have to change anything on your computer.
The alternative is to find the service center for your brand of laptop, get them to install a new drive and transfer all the files over to it.
It is not really a DIY project like changing a HDD in a desktop unless you are really comfortable ripping a laptop apart. You need to have the original driver and windows CDs available as well. |

120k won you can get a 500 gig hdd and get a case for about 30k.
150k for 500 gigs.
It's not that much bigger in terms of physical size. |

A 2.5" vs. a 3.5"...there is quite a difference indeed when you factor in the external case size. In fact, a 3.5" with external case is downright cumbersome. A 2.5" fits into your shirt pocket. That, and the 2.5" won't need a power cord...it will run off the USB port power. |

My hard drive died yesterday (Windows wouldn't load no matter what I did) so I took ot to the Samsung service centre on Level 6 (where all the phones are) at Technomart.
The guy there had a look at it, and showed me that the HDD was gone to the point where to get the data from it I would have to go to some other place and pay 220,000 won. For a few gigs of free music movies and porn I said no thanks although it hurts to lose some photos that are irreplaceable.
He told me he would install a new 100GB HD and put XP on it and it would take 30 minutes.
The new HDD cost me 76,000won, the fee was 37,000won and it took about an hour.
The only problem was that he wouldn't install XP in English. But it was in Korean on my old HDD anyway, so I didn't mind too much.
I'm sure it would all be cheaper to do myself, but I don't have the know how. |

The difficulty depends on the laptop. I bought an external harddrive and
an enclosure. Basically the harddrive plugs into the plug and then
two screws hold on the cover. The enclosure even comes with
a little screwdriver but they guy who sold it to me insisted on putting
it together and formatting it first.
As for replacing the one in computer: My harddrive is in a little sliding plastic
piece that's held in with one screw. I don't remember how many screws
hold it into the plastic drawer. Probably four. There is no cable. When
you slide it in just slides into the plug.
The hard part will be replacing the software. I would backup all my important
files and then reload everything from the original disks.
Actually I would probably make two backups. My first one would be all the important files to put back on after reloading the original software. The second backup would be a current recover disk with the software that came with my computer just in case the reload doesn't go well. |

Thanks for the replies!
I'm not interested in an external HD, I already have two of them. What I need is more space on my actual machine for portability reasons. I'm sure I can handle the mechanical issues of replacement, but I'm not sure about saving all of my software. I do have some system restore discs. Would there be any problem in using them with a different HD? After that, i just don't want to lose any of the stuff I already have installed, which came from all kinds of different places. |

most HDs on laptops are easily replaceable. if you look at the bottom of your laptop, there should be two panels that can be opened by removing two (or more screws). one of them should be for your memory and the other should be your HD. again, this is the case for *most* laptops.
hard drives and memory upgrades are the two most common changes to a laptop so most manufacturers make it so it's easy to do.
to do this without having to do a reinstall of your OS and programs, will probably mean you have to somehow get an image of your current drive and transfer it over to your new hard drive. this is a software issue and there are tons of programs that can do this, e.g. Norton Ghost.
hope that helps. |
