I'd like to get a credit card over here, one with a Korean or Asian bank so that I won't lose money with the currency exchange. I have very good credit with no large accounts or outstanding balances back home. How can I get a credit card? Thanks in advance. |

I've got a secured one from Woori bank. You put down a million and get 950k won 'credit'. I just use it to pay Skylife and the few things you need a CC for here. Failing that, apply for a Samsung card through Costco. |

If you work at a uni or public school you can get any number of credit cards.
If you work at a hakwon you are limited to the "secured" cards from the banks.

Your credit rating at home has no meaning here and is not a factor. |

Just a word of warning.
There is a woman posting on the Korea Herald Freeboard that she "just wants to help" foreigners get a credit card, because it's difficult to do so.
I was hoping to get a card so I could get discounts at Bennigan's, Outback, etc.
I met with the lady from the Korea Herald Freeboard post, and she explained all of the terms. I decided against getting the card, because to get the discounts, I would have to spend over 100,000 per month on the card. I knew I'd never do that, so it was useless to me (I have credit cards from home already).
She then became upset (almost crying) and said I should pay her for taking the time to meet me and explain the terms in English.
Luckily, my Korean girlfriend was with me at the time. She was more upset than I was that this woman would attempt to take advantage of foreingers by expecting money.
My girlfriend is sure this has nothing to do with Samsung policy, has taken this woman's contact information, and will be calling Samsung Card to complain.
This woman gave no notice of expecting money for her services if I chose not to get the card. Her jesture to "help" foreigners by providing English saddens me. If I were to help someone in the USA by speaking Korean with them, I wouldn't charge them extra for this.
If you are really interested in getting a card from her, you probably can, but I certainly won't. |
