I'm doing a 3 night stopover in Taiwan. Arrive on a Saturday early evening, and fly out on a Tuesday. I would appreciate some pointers, since I have never been there.
For one, I am not that interested in Taipei, having already lived in several big Asian cities. What I'd love to see is some of Taiwan's beautiful coastal scenery. So, the question is -- what steps should I take upon arrival to get myself out of the airport to some coastal places, and then back to the airport on time a few days later to continue with my journey?
Any first-hand advice or links to good Taiwan travel sites will be appreciated. |

Fulong Beach and Baishawan are both scenic, and since they're on the north coast, fairly close to Tapei. Getting to Fulong is easy, take a train from Taipei to Fulong. There are plenty of buses between the airport and train station. Baishawan's a little more difficult to get to, requiring a bus from the Danshui MRT station to Keelung. But it's also more scenic. |

You should go to Dashi, which is 30 minutes past Fulong and is more beautiful and secluded. Plus there are raves every now and again. Also there is a local grandma there who rents out rooms in her house for really cheap. Just ask one of the locals about a place to stay (younger ones speak decent English, grandma doesn't).
On the way back you can stop at Fulong - another beach - or go to Jiufun (translation 9rice) - it will be spelled a number of different ways - it may look like Chiufan - it's a beautiful little mountain town where you can drink hot Chinese tea made perfectly while overlooking the northern coast. It's beautiful and there are a lot of old temples there. it's small so you won't get lost. Just get off at the town and get a taxi - very cheap - to the tea shops.
To get there you should go to Taipei Main Station (main floor) and buy a train ticket to Fulong - don't say Dashi because there are two in Taiwan and it can get confusing - and then just continue on to Dashi. You will be going east/north.
If you get stuck in Taipei for the night go to Shillin market - it's the biggest snake night market in Taiwan. It's pretty good. Or take the subway to the farthest northern station (forgot the name sorry). It's right on the ocean and there are lots of little pubs and millions of food stalls and things to look at.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I did a two-week motorcycle trip around Taiwan a few years back and the best place in my opinion is Taroko Gorge near Hualien. For your trip, I recommend that place above all else. Take a tour bus or train to Hualien, rent a scooter, and drive into the gorge. I've seen no other place like it. |
