I need to sign the contract to a school really fast....or I can't get a visa before I leave. I want one before I leave. I'm running out of days to process it and won't want to do a visa run. I wonder if this is the location I should choose or not. What's it like. Quick, hurry....what's it like??? AHhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! Thanks! |

Ok dong is where all the hagwons are. Lots of foreigners work there, but not that many actually live there. Are you sure you will be living and working in the same area?
Don't know. Most cities in Korea are pretty much the same. Maybe if you had a specific question.... |

Nope, I haven't ...Its not really a choice I think. All the other locations SUCKED, this seems like a better spot and the contract is really good. |

Desperation, you will end up with a bad placement if you rush. Just do your research well and then go for the visa run.
If there's no possibility of speaking to current and past teachers, PASS! |

It's definitely not rural. Ok dong isn't in the industrial section of town either. The beaches are going to be about 45 minutes away by bus. There are no "forests" like you are thinking of, but there are mountains with trees.
Honestly, if you're not into the bar scene, Ulsan might not be the place for you. There are a lot of foreign teachers in Ulsan, and most of them just hang out in the two foreigner bars.
As far as western stuff, there isn't really a lot in Ok dong. Nearby there is you standard Homeplus, McDonalds, etc. If you really need to be in an area that has a lot of western stuff, this isn't the place for you. Tons of people get by there just fine tho.
Having said that, you are (potentially) making a huge mistake by rushing into a contract. Also, not being able to talk to another teacher would be an instant deal breaker.
Good Luck. |

If there's a lot of westerners, that's good I figure. I don't drink but if they are bar flies, than I'm not going to hang out with them no matter what. I live in a college town.....I hate barflies. McDOnalds.......ahhh I was like thinking of health food stores and toiletries and whatnot....A costco or whatever? An emart.....a nonweird grocery store or 2 or 3....Good restaurants....maybe real burgers if I had to have one... |

I almost planned on teaching at a hagwon in Ok-dong last year. Until I talked to the teachers at the school and I could see that they where not to happy with the school.
It is always best to talk to the teachers at the school.
Ok-dong area is around the center of the city and you have a TGIF.
You are lose to the river by old down town with the foreigners hang out on the weekends.
Your about a 5 minute taxi ride from the two shopping stores, Outback, and Bennigens.
You are about a 45 minute bus ride from the ocean. |

Hey,
Me and my gf live right near okdong and its good. We're not bar flys but we have a good time here in Ulsan. From Okdong its about a 5-10 min bus ride into samsandong which has Lotte department store, Lotte cinemas, Hyundai Department store, Outback, Bennigans, 2 pizza huts and Marche Move n pick.
Then in Okdong you are only around 5 minutes from Lotte Mart, Homeplus (both sell lots of western foods), TGIF, VIPS and also if you like nature Ulsan Grand Park is in Okdong. There are also a few good discount stores in Okdong.
Also Old downtown is not far away. About 5 mins by cab or 30 mins walk. Over there is CGV and Megabox cinemas plus walking street that has heaps of stores and resturants. Also in that area is an Italian restuant and an Indian resturant.
The ocean is only 45 mins away but to tell you the truth the beaches in Ulsan are not that good, the only one I recommend is called Ilsan beach, It is really easy to get to, the 401 bus takes you straight there and only costs 1000 won each way. Ilsan beach also has the only subway sandwich store that I have seen.
Remember also that Busan is only 1 hour away. Which has Haeundae beach. Also Gyongju is only an hour away which is capital of the Silla dynasty.
I really enjoy Ulsan. Many people will say that it is a place for bar flys but seriously there is heaps here. Remember Ulsan is a city of 1.3 million so it's not a small place.
Also- ulsanweb.com and ulsanpear.biz has alot of good info on it
I hope this may help.

I have lived in Ok-Dong for the past year and its been good to us. Grand Park with its 130+ acres is our back yard and we love that. Get a scooter and everything in town is easily accessible. If you look there are tons of opportunities beyond the bar scene. |

Do I need a lisence for a scooter? Can I get the AAA int'l thingy mailed to me while I'm in Korea or they don't even want one for a scooter? I'm so suprised that this region is actually NOT BAD ! Wow. Thanks ya'll. |
