Are there any?

I've been more or less promised a letter of release by the Hagwon I just quit at, but I have my nagging doubts about it; I'll believe it when I see it. They say they'll give it to me Friday.

In the meanwhile, I'm wary. If they somehow welch on the release, what are my options, if any? What motivation does a school have for not signing a letter of release?

You can tell immi that your school is refusing you a letter of release - then immi should call your school. This process has been reported as being successful by quite a few teachers on this board in the past. Good luck.

Just don't go to work and let them fire you...then cancel your visa when going through immigration (they always ask if you're coming back if your visa isn't yet finished) just say the school closed and you're not coming back. Then find a new job from home or another second country. It works fine, I've done it before.

I already have a new job, supposed to start next week. Does that complicate things or simplify them?

It's complicated if you don't get the letter on Friday and have to start on Monday. Does your employer know about your new job? That is what you should be worried about. If you don't get the letter follow Spliff's advice and hop on the ferry for Japan.

A list of all the parents' phone numbers and a bi-linual Korean friend got one for me.

My employer does know about my new job, actually. My supervisor has been pretty nice about it thus far, even gave me some advice on where to look for a new job, and promised me a letter of release, but the real decision to write the letter is in the hands of the Hagwon owner, who has been VERY unpleasant to me since I gave notice. I have a supportive and unusually ethical recruiter that can assist me with a run if it's necessary, and the new school says they can flex on my start date a little if there are visa processing issues. So it looks like this should be doable even if my Hagwon owner tries to screw me. Hopefully....
