I am at a public school in Gyeonggi-Do. My first paycheck was for 1 month and 9 days, yet they took off 2 months worth of pension fund and health benefits, when I said this was wrong they told me this is normal, you have to pay monthly even if I only was in Korea teaching for 9 of the days??? Is this true?

Second they are telling me that for my vacation time, I only have to do camps until the start of august. I thought to myself sweet 3 weeks off!.... Wrong. Even though they don't have work for me, if I want my salary I have to come into school everyday and play on the internet and basically F*&# off. If I want to go away I HAVE to use my 14 days paid vacation. Has anyone had this problem either?

1. not sure about.

2. yeah, you only get to stay away from school for your designated vacation time. You could try to butter up your VP and prinicpal though. They might let you have some extra vacation days. Don't mention it to them directly though, just see if they mention it to you. It might not work for this vacatoin, but keep buttering and you'll probably have some extra time off in winter. I'm supposed to get 4 weeks a year, but I've already had at least 6. Just bring in some DVDs, get yourself on videolemon.com, or bring a good book this summer.

Why do people complain about this? It's right there in your contract that you HAVE to work during the vacation period. If you feel this is unfair then you shouldn't have signed the contract in the first place.

You may want to check about coming in to work at 8:30 or 9am and then returning at 4:30 or 5. I know that during the school's midterm exam period all teachers got to leave early, but since I had been at the school for less than 1 year I technically wasn't allowed to leave. 30 minutes after the rest of the teachers left the VP said I could go home, but I had to submit a 1 page writeup of work that I did related to teaching. I just printed out copies of my TESOL worksheets and everything was cool.

For now though, stop complaining about lack of vacation time.

Nope...I and my wife are going home for most of August. Frankly, if my principle made me do something as unreasonable as that, I'd simply find a new school for my next contract.

No idea what your talking about. I've never had pay problems. As far as pension goes, you'll get it back when you leave Korea anyway.

2. Never had to come into school during vacation, other than for english camp. My contract says 2 weeks a year, but I get about 13 or 14 minus english camps.

The pension does work that way. I'm pretty sure you can check it on the website, do a search on Dave's for pension threads: I'd get it for you, but not at my home computer, so my favorites are different. Smile

I had the same issue, but don't make a fuss out of it, cuz it does work that way, and you get the money back anyways.

#1, yes, that is how it works and assuming you are from north america you get a benefit from it (their matching contribution) when you go home. Net is about 50k won pension benefit - medical.

#2 - this is also common. You agreed to it when you signed the contract so why is it a surprise now?

As a side note: If you are on a GEPIK contract it should read 14 WORKING days for your paid vacation and the vacation time does NOT include the weekends or public holidays as part of your paid holiday.

Regarding the vacation times and sitting on your butt all day....I know all to well about this. And regardless about what others say about "oh, you know it's in the contract", it all depends on the principal. And that is what frustrates me and will severely screw up your brain this summer as well. Some of your "buddies" at other schools will do a week camp and won't have to come back 'till Sept. 3rd. Others will do a couple weeks camp and get 3 off...and be allowed to leave the country.

It's a roll of the dice here. I've got mates who had Dec. 23 to Jan. 31st off, the end of Feb. (2 weeks) off and do a 2 week camp in July and are free to do what ever until Sept. 3rd. Me, I sat at school after my winter camp, sat for 2 weeks in Feb. and luckily will leave early August after a camp. Can't do it anymore. I feel for ya.

I got an offer from GEPIK for a public high school. Is anyone here working for GEPIK in a high school? How does your summer vacation/camps work out?

1. Yes, it's true because the school accounting system does not pro-rate your pay terms. So you better bear with it.
2. Yes, it's very normal for many public schools in Korea or around the world. It doesn't make sense but that's how the system works.

Conclusion: if you don't like the way your school treats you, just quit it and go find another school that meets your demands, or better yet quit it once and for all and leave Korea. Judging from your posts you are not even qualified to teach. You need to be mature to be called "a teacher". Do not degrade yourself swearing on an internet forum.

It really depends on the individual school. Talk to the current foreign teacher if you can. He can tell you what happened last year and what will probably happen at THAT SCHOOL during the next year.

Most schools that run camps have them planned for (or at least the dates booked on the school calendar) a year in advance.

If there is nothing planned it depends on your principal / VP. You may spend your time at home, you may spend it warming a chair in an empty school or you (small may here) may be allowed to leave the country on an extended holiday.

My first pay was for 1 month and 5 days and the same thing with pay happened to me ... But I did check the websites and what had been taken out was correct ... because it was based on months worked ... even if it was only for some of the days in the month ... But being pension I wasn't too worried because I will get it back eventually ... That is simply the law here ... not just something the school is doing to stuff us around ... It is however something to be aware of when you are negotiating for a start date ... that even one day in the previous month will mean paying for 2 months from the first pay...

I haven't confirmed the details of my vacation yet ... but I do know from what other people have said that a little bit of it does depend on the school ... but at least some people had heard that schools in Gyeonggi may be tighter than previous on our working in the vacation ... as per our contracts ... Our contracts give us 14 working days in the year ... and anything else we get ... including half days with things like exams ... is simply a bonus ... I fully expect to need to be at school for at least part of the day on most days of my vacation ... except for the days that I end up taking as my paid vacation ... I do stand with you in finding it difficult to sit at work with nothing that I actually have to do ... and trying to find things to do to "fill in time". ... I would very much rather have something to do .... But in this setting ... what we are required to do ... is simply what we are asked to do ... even if that is "nothing" ... by the people who are over us in terms of "authority" ... In part this is from the cultural premise of respect for elders (for those in authority) ... and doing what they want without arguing the point ... I think that some of the bonus's like half days or other days off do come after they do realise that you are prepared to play the cultural game ... and just do what is required ... It is easier to cope with if you recognise that anything over the 14 paid working days vacation is a bonus ... and not an entitlement ....

And this also reminds me that I do really need to find out what is happening with our vacation ... I know that I am not going to go out of the country ... so I haven't needed to worry about trying to book flights ...

For all of you public school teachers who get stuck sitting there all day with nothing to do (I am a public school elementary school teaches and teach all of the breaks except my vacation), why not use the time productively and take an online TEFL course if you aren't certified. This will raise your salary to a level 1 teacher in most contracts. That's what I decided to do as I am required to be here 7 1/2 hours a day. There is even a program based here in Korea that's only about $250.00. I have actually taken two courses just for the fun of it. My first was ITTT (http://www.teflcorp.com/) and my second was the one here in Korea, KEI-TEFL (http://www.koredinco.com ). I actually like the second one better as it was completely on-line and I could work at my own pace. The first one is not really on-line but rather an email correspondence course where they only allow you to have 2 units at a time.

The long and the short of it, why sit and be bored when you can improve your credentials, get a raise, and possibly become a better teacher?

Bear256 is right, the program from KEI is completely online...There are some good benefits for people who receive additional training to upgrade their credentials...The raise does actually exist for people who want to spend the money for the training, people who go through training programs generally come away with a better sense of how to do the work they are hired for...The KEI program is one that is fully registered with the Korean government, so there should be no worries about acceptance from your schools...
