No, I'm not talking about the teachers. Although that happens enough...
There is a volleyball team that uses our gymnasium to practice on Wednesday evenings. It turns out they left behind some unopened soju after their practice. Yesterday, after the lunch hour, teachers were surprised to find 3 5th grade boys wandering around in an inebriated state. Turns out they had found the soju and played a rock-scissors-paper drinking game. Parents were called to collect the children. I saw one mother who was furious with her son, while another father thought it was hilarious.
Overall, a big deal wasn't made of the event. Most of the teachers found it very funny. I can only imagine the horrified reactions had this happened back home in the States.
Anyone working at a hogwan REALLY needs to consider getting a public school job. Not just because of better working conditions, but the entertainment value of this job is priceless. |

| At the last teachers night out, one of the male English teachers, this quiet, older (52) guy, is wasted and starts stumbling around, groping the lady teachers and secretaries, and then, when a few of the guy teachers escorted him outside, he starts fighting. Himself mostly, wildly throwing punches in the air then falling down. Amazingly, no one raised an eyebrow or really cared. Nor the next day at work. Unless I am missing some Korean subtext, it was like he never made a jackass out of himself. |

| He did make a jackass out of himself...but in Korea to maintain harmony it is better not to say anything about it and just pretend like nothing ever happened. This kind of public denial is common problem resolution. |

Its better than the huge media storm that would occur in the West. |

| Our last staff piss-up, with all of the usual baffoonery, happened on Wednesday night in the middle of the soccer pitch, gathered around a 'campfire', with a bunch of students looking on from the dormitory windows. I could never teach in Canada again. |

Been there done that and felt up the manageress. gone into the ladies toilets and shared a drink with a female teacher trying to have a pee, fallen all over a restaurant (two of them) filled a karaoke room full of vomit (twice) had a kiss and a grope with another female teacher then was left to sleep it off outside the local cinema.
Nothing was said when I went back to work. |

Yesterday at my MS before I leave I want to go get some supplies that are stored in a certain teacher's room for my lessons today. There on the cabinet containing the supplies I need is two-thirds of a mickey-shaped bottle of cham soju.
'Is that really soju?' I ask the student I got to help me. She nods. I open and smell it; it is.
'Whose soju is that'?
'Mrs Kim's'.
'She just left it there'? More nods.
There it is, sitting there for any student to take - just enough to get a middle school girl wasted or two decently tipsy.
I can only guess how long it will be til we have a similar situation if she keeps that up.
Then I went down to the staff room and got buzzed off some of the two cases of Hite a student's parent dropped off for the staff. |

My principal got drunk in the school playground after our festival.
He was so drunk he fell out of his chair while watching the students' show in the evening.

At one of my schools there is about 2 cases of beer in the icebox. Then at another school they have about 12 big bottles of beer in the icebox. |

| What a coincidence. I read this post this morning before work and this morning at the Elementary school that I work at, 3 girls were caught drinking a can of beer in the bathroom. I was with 5 other teachers. One of the male teachers was trying to hold back his smile. I had to hold back my own laughter because it was pretty funny. None of the teachers seemed outraged either. I'm not sure what punishment they got. |
