8 strikes, you're out: Man gets life for DWI
Associated Press
GEORGETOWN - A Marshall man was sentenced today to life in prison for his eighth drunken driving conviction.
A Williamson County jury on Wednesday convicted Gary Gibbs, 49, who was stopped in December 2003 by Georgetown police. Records show it was the eighth DWI-related conviction for Gibbs since 1986.Gibbs, who had worked as a country singer, will not be eligible for parole for 30 years.
A police videotape of Gibbs doing field sobriety tests showed him stumbling. |

I don't think he should have gotten life, but LONG AGO he should have been banned from having a licence, or legally owning a car, for life. And it should have been made illegal for anyone to sell or loan him a car, on penalty of imprisonment.
Personally, I think anyone who causes the death of another person while DUI should get the death penalty. But that's just me. |

I'm sure this was already the case. These kind of guys keep driving, despite having no license and no registration. There was a guy in Canada who had 16 DUI's in 15 years. The judge gave him 2 or 3 years in jail. When they get out, the odds are they will drive again. The only way to guarantee they won't drive is to lock em up. |

Yeah, I've known people like that too. They'll buy a car, steal the plates, and drive it around until they are busted. |

Either:
a) The people who let him have their car should also be punished.
or
b) He should also face some kind of theft charges that would have put him away sooner. |

I would like to say that as well as thoroughly disapproving of those who drive drunk in the West, I think it is just as disgraceful if it is done by an Arab goat farmer in Syria. There is no excuse for drink-driving, even if you are a muslim!
I hope Ya-ta boy and SteveMcGarrett are taking proper notice. |

What??????
who said anything about Muslims? Who said anything about being lenient towards goat farmers in Syria? I guess Syria has a huge problem with drunk driving.... |

I have mixed feelings about the sentence. There was one person who I knew that had a personal experience with her family going through hell because of a family member's drunk driving.
The person's brother had several DUI's in Oregon and had his license suspended. Some time later he moved to South Carolina and met someone who he lived with for a long period of time (sorry I can't remember some of the details). Anyway the guy continued to drive drunk despite not having a license (he actually did get caught a few times in SC as well before this incident). One night he was driving home drunk and ran off the road and killed his girlfriend.
At the time the phone call came in, I was there and the horror his family went through was just gut wrenching. I can't imagine what his girlfriend's family went through (I didn't know her family or the brother directly). His family found a good attorney, but his prior record of DUI's finally caught up to him. He got 15 years for Manslaughter, which is probably considered a light sentence by some.
Anyway, that's one of my experiences in terms of knowing someone's family who was put through hell because of drunk driving. |
