A Korean friend commented on her blog:
Quote: |
I see so many stressed out kids that I worry that they'll have a lot of bottled up inner rage that's going to explode when they hit puberty. I saw a kid crying in frustration waiting for a hagwon bus mumbling "I want to sleep, I want to sleep". He's probably being shipped around a gazillion hagwons all day. He looked about 8. It bugged the crap out of me. |
It got me thinking. Suppose SBS came to you and asked you about Korean English education. What would your sound byte be? Remember they're only going to use about 30 seconds of what you say.
Mine would be this:
Parents should stop throwing their money away putting their kids in hagwon 6 nights a week. Take it from me, they're not learning. I struggle just to keep them awake. English education is important but 10 year olds with midnight bedtimes can't learn. Send them three nights max. Let your children be children. |

I would say:
"Foreigners do not like to be shouted "Hello" at. Fried potato is a Konglish expression. Banks overseas do not all issue passbooks. Just because I drink doesn't mean I'm an alcoholic. Yes I can eat spicy food."
And then storm off. |

I wouldn't tell them anything. It'd get mangled and taken out of context. A foreigner on SBS criticizing Korea isn't good for ratings, but a foreigner ranting and looking like a freak is. |

I would tell them "There's too much preoccupation with tests here. Just because there's a big prestigious international language test you can take doesn't mean it's the best thing to study with. The tests are supposed to record your progress, not guide it. When people study for these tests, they only study what is needed and neglect what is not on the test because they don't think it's important. Most people study for them not to learn English, but to get good jobs, where they will most likely never use English. Essentially, they are wasting thousands of hours filling their heads with useless words and patterns. If you want to learn English, take a practical approach, because no matter how high your test scores are, if you call me 'Mr Jon' I'm going to laugh at you and know that your English is not good enough." |

I would say, "I don't like it when my students touch me because I have AIDS".
or maybe not. I'd probably rant about Hagwon bosses being crooks and how half my students are on suicide watch. So if Korean mums want to give money to a 'gang' and have their children learn no English before jumping off Lotte Castle then good luck. |

Two things; No, I'm not an American.
And; chanting at maximum volume is not communicating. It's just annoying and headache inducing. |

I'd rant about Korean immigration law. I'd take a calm, rational approach, but it would be hard. |

I would tell them that they need to forget other hagwons and put their kids in more English Hagwons. They need more hours of one-on-one time with native speakers. They need to offer more money to native speakers, or they will lose them to China.
Salaries overall need to rise substantially and quickly or else the whole country is doomed. |

English teachers should be required to run around the block twice in the morning and twice at the end of classes. This will keep them in tip-top shape and it will also make them too tired to post on Dave's esl.
