I lost my American passport after applying for an Alien Registration Card two days ago. Now I am without a passport and ARC.

Should I wait until I receive my ARC before applying for a new passport? I am concerned about losing my E-2 Visa status.

ummm..... they keep your passport while they process your ARC. At least they have for every other applicant I have met over the last 6 years.

You should get both back together in a few days from the immigration office.

Hhah... wouldn't that be a sigh of relief for the OP to realize he left it with immigration all of this time?

Is this true? I could swear that I took my passport back.

I really hope this is true.

When I was still on the E2 I lost my passport. Not a problem. Replace it. Go to immigration with new passport. It wont affect your visa.

You got a pick-up receipt for your passport from Immi?

The Korean co-worker who went with me kept all the receipts. I don't have her phone number.

So does immigration hold your passport while the ARC is in process? Thanks!

Report your passport missing/stolen immediately and get it replaced. It is required that you inform Immigration that you have changed your passport within ten days that you receive it.

First wait and see if Immigration has it. You can call Monday morning at 9:00.

Immigration has it. It is standard for them to keep it while doing your ARC. They have mine right now, in fact, for a visa changeover.

Because I just experienced the same thing.

Came home(to my pad in Namyangju), noticed my front unlocked and desk drawer was open and my passport wasn't where I had been keeping it. The last time I remember (thinking about it now) having it was last week at the alien registration place in Uijongbo (or whatever they call it). I guess I'll ask the Korean teacher who went with me if she remembers them keeping it. She's got a good memory for those things. I just find it hard to believe that there'd be anybody out here in the boondocks (Namyangju) who would know to or want to come into my apartment to look for a passport. They didn't touch my laptop or a fairly nice Casio camera I had sitting right there too.

I'm now thinking that I'm OK.

They gave me mine back. I think it took 30 minutes total including me filling out the form.
