I was informed by my co-teacher that the EPIK newsletter from last week, says I have two weeks of summer camp. This part is okay and assumed by me. What wasn't assumed, is both co-teachers (two girls middle schools), have said that I have to teach 30 classes each week.
Has anyone else been told this? I realize we can "be made" to stay for the forty hours a week. There is no way in heck I want to even be at one of the schools any longer than necessary, let alone teach that many classes there!
I've agreed to do 30 for my first school, but have told the second school I don't want the extra classes (don't care about the"extra" money either). I doubt they could make me feel any less of a person either.
Have considered that it may be a good time to get sick during part of that second week (stress wrecks havoc on the body). Really though, I wouldn't mind doing the extra classes if I only had to deal with the students; but, I don't.
Soooooooo - has anyone else been told you have to work 30 classes? |

Contract says 22 classes per week and government policy is a max of 28.
The magic word is NO.
If they insist tell them that YOU insist they find a new teacher and they can have your letter of resignation on their desk in an hour.
They can choose... 20 classes of camp per week or find a new teacher, thank you very much.
They will back down.
They are in the wrong and they know it. STAND on your contract (and if you were presented a modified contract, STAND on government policy).
(it's in the Korean "care of your foreigner" handbook) |

Thanks for your answer. Just a couple of questions.
1. Why did you say 20 hours versus the 22?
My contract is not modified. 22 hours/20 days leave per year.
2. I have never seen the handbook. Where can I get my hands on one? (Co-teacher?)
I've written EPIK and will see if they respond. I really would like to finish my second half of the contract, but I do refuse to be pushed.
So yes, I will resign if the second school doesn't get a grip on reality. |

From the older (perhaps 2006) standard contract:
used to be -
Article 12 paid leave
2.During school vacations , Employee may be asked to participate in special classes or English camps, up to 20 hours per week.
I do note however that this clause is NOT in article 14 (paid leave) of the currently published EPIK contract.
It is still in the Gyeonggi (and some other) provincial contracts. |
