Its nearly 30 years since Dark Side of the Moon and subsequent investigations into other PF musics and after all of that listening and analyzing I have discovered what turned me off initially. Yes, I didn't enjoy PF music for a long time although I know its technically and artistically advanced. I can't deny its good music. It's very good music.

Its just dismal and depressing music. Since 1970, PF music has been about Sid going nuts and filling his pants at the sanitiarium, Waters pining over his best friend in a straight jacket rocking back and forth and talking to himself.

Dark Side didn't deal directly with the matter but none-the-less, they managed to make songs about war, greed, death and hopelessness.
Wish You Were Here was a an hour long whine and Animals was a revisit to the life is pain scourge.

Goth? Whiny? Reflective? Don't know, can't really tell... its just not happy music.

Meddle was the last band-sound record where they actually played some Rock 'n Roll. I like that record and Obscured by Clouds too. Good happy music for good times even with Jefftrey Dahmer Rock or "One of These Days" I'm going to cut you into little pieces. What kind of message is that?

X has a female singer, Exene Cervenka that I had to learn to like too. I think she sings off key on purpose and it just grates my pleasure senses.

Oh, "The Wall" was bad in a number of ways. It looks like a a reluctant Broadway musical. It looks like an Andrew LLoyd Weber production except much less focused.

I admire them for dealing with dark, uncommercial matters. They tackled unpopular subject matter. Stuff that people don't want to deal with. I don't listen to them much but I really respect The 'Floyd.

Yeah, you're right--they are without question the best pissypants millionaires in the rock world.
I still like a dose now and again though. Brings back my junior high school days, in all their smoke-addled melancholic pissiness. I'm glad I listened to a lot of punk and thrash in those days too, otherwise I'd probably've slit my wrists...

Good call on 'Meddle' and 'Obscured by Clouds.' The soundtrack they did for 'More' has some really good stuff too, BTW, from about the same period, if you haven't already heard it.

i agree with you to some extent but while it is reflective there is a happy note, even tho there are some crappy aspects of society ultimately friendship and caring about other people are the most important things.

you know that I care what happens to you,
and I know that you care for me.
so I don't feel alone,
or the weight of the stone,
now that I've found somewhere safe
to bury my bone.
and any fool knows a dog needs a home,
a shelter from pigs on the wing.

when it was released Waters said it was a comment on contempoary society.

it was Waters baby and too theatrical, esp the movie, (he has recently written and produced an opera) for the other members, one of the reasons Waters left.

These would have been great pink Floyd lyrics.

Alternate opening for the "The Wall"
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
(Steve Wright)

Somewhere in "Darkside of the Moon"
Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.
(Steve Wright)

Dam, I miss The Floyd.

Great music, sounds and shows.

Well, there is hope for one more tour, but I think these guys are done.

I LOVE Pink Floyd. I mean I used to. But after hearing their stuff over and over over the years I love it like it's a re-run. But at the time it shook me, baby. I remember being a young'un and just marvelling at how they were marvelling. Here it was, truth. These guys were truth farkers. Their thing was farking Truth.

Dark Side of The Moon is, of course, a masterpiece. When I first heard it everything in me that was alive sung with it. These guys were philosophers, deep, had angst. They were tackling mortality, and immortality, but it was rock. It was for idealists, truth farkers. They're like Led Zeppelin but with lyrics and something to say.

The Wall is fantastic. I've been distraught and, as with all Pink Floyd, found it's talking about two moods, truths, at the same time. Love and duplicity. Joy and loss. Innocence and corruption. Switched on moments of genius on tape.

Oh, not at all!

It all depends upon the presentation.

Johnny Rotten wore a Pink Floyd T-Shirt with the words, "I hate" on it.
He also sang, I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper when he first met Malcolm Maclaren.

My personal opinion their song, "Comforatably Numb" is great.
Personally I don't like Prog rock.

"The Stranglers" were an underrated band. Kind of Punky lyrics but with a Doors like keyboard player . Their song "Golden Brown", beats any Pink Floyd song hands down.

Pink Floyd sucks.

Just go listen to some Jethro Tull or something.
