and all I have to say is that Koreans stand out in the crowd. Right around Koh-San road, loads of different nationalities, and the race that I knew I could pick out and be 100% sure of was that that guy or girl is Korean. This was verified be either myself or my GF (she is K) by walking by and listening to them speak.
I am not saying this is a good thing or a bad thing.
The prototype Kgal: umbrella on a beautiful day. Dress. Mainly covered up. With 1 to 3 friends. Never alone. Pictures everywhere with the V sign. Looking at most things while walking very slowly with a "I am not sure where I am going" look. Or, could be with the three generation crew, daughter in dress, mom and grandma following in Burberry. All sporting huge sun hats.
Kguy-With his buddy or two. Looking lost, not confident in when they walk into a restaurant, and just not relaxed. At one point, they may walk half way into a place not dig it and bolt! Sporting an odd colored shirt with even a more odder color pair of shorts.
K-Couple- This was easy! He is doing everything for her. Swatting the flies away, looking tired but making sure she was happy. She was consistently on the look out for bugs, a little more happier look on her face than the dude and last but not least, the matching shirts and/or pants/shorts.
I went to Koh Phangan. Its my favorite place. I have a few friends there and I ask them if they get many Koreans. This one American woman I know that lives there says its very rare to never.
My GF figures that Koreans will not go there because they are a resort holiday kind of folk. Koh Phangan lacks that for sure.
Anyhow, great trip....my GF got a kick out of me pointing Koreans out, so much so that she got in on the act too. At one point we would look at each other and just break out into laughter when looking out onto the street.
Just an observation. Needless to say my time in this country has made it so that I can do that. You tend to learn peoples quirks and trends when living amongst. If I were to just be the guy that stayed home and never traveled I know for sure I would not be able to do it.
Though there is always a classic young Canadian guy in Koh Phangan too. 22 or 23 years old, drunk by noon at the bar, talking about how great the full moon party was or is going to be and reciting you the words to the film "Old Skool" line for line as it plays on the tvs around the bar.... You know who you are!

Hah! I COMPLETELY noticed this; Koreans, despite traveling so damned much, don't really look comfortable when they are. I was not only in Thailand, but Laos, and found it really funny that I could pretty much automatically spot Koreans. Whenever I'd talk to them they were pretty freaked out that this random guy could speak korean. |

Thats funny. I have that some power but it only works with seeing black people in America and white people in the Caribbean. |

The Koreans in Iran were mostly really cool and fit right in with everybody else. The Korean guy I was kind of travelling with for a bit would just walk right into places and try to make things work. In fact, he was probably better at getting his point across than I was. No running away for him. |

That sounds like most tourists around KSR. Wierd colored shorts and tops? Have you ever noticed the 'unwashed' there? |

KSR? What a fantastic place! I can't wait to get back to Thailand so I can spend as much time there as possible!
And I used to think that Itaewon was the cat's meow....

Koreans seem to travel everywhere on tour coaches, are herded around like sheep and only talk to other Koreans. From the sex bars of Pattaya to the temples Angkor Wat Koreans stick out like a sore thumb. |
